Sustainability and Oneness Film Fest

We're putting together a mini–film festival on the theme of sustainability. The film festival will be part of The Sustainable Living Roadshow, an event touring college campuses across the United States beginning in August of this year. In each city, the Global Oneness Project will be presenting 4 hours of films, including discussion.

We are putting together a Discussion Guide, which will be used both at the film festival and in local high schools.

What questions do you think would spark the most meaningful conversations?

The current playlist for the Film Fest is located here.

How is our relationship to nature connected to sustainable agriculture? sustainable energy usage?

How can we strengthen that relationship?

Why do you think our culture is so dependent on acquiring things?

What does it mean to shift from a "me-based" culture to a "we-based" culture?

How is nurturing the land connected to nurturing oneself?

If I am interconnected and interdependent with everything in this world, what is my individual responsibility to the whole?

One thing that comes to mind for me is who is the "we" in the "we-based" culture? Like one of the other videos pointed out, whose oneness is it? How inclusive is it?

I was just at the grocery store and overheard a couple of young men talking at the checkout line, one was making a point about how everyone is on a journey of self discovery, so that in itself was kind of hopeful. But I can't help but wonder if kids like them would end up at an event like the Sustainability Road Show. Incidentally I had just seen M. Night Shyamalan's "The Happening" which deals with the subject..

If you could write a new story for humanity that would bring us back into harmony with the Web of Life, what would that story be?

At the most practical level, I feel like we need to get real facts in order to even begin dealing with the  ramifications inherent of Oneness. Facts that are not only profoundly subjectively warped for individual gain, but numbers that I fear most people will never have the power of authenticating and verifying.

We need to know exactly how much of how many resources we have on this planet, and we need to divide those statistics amongst the population on Earth evenly in order to come up with a working ratio, and also to begin giving us some perspective on what kind of lifestyle that would entail, and how we would begin living to promote that just statistic.

It would be good idea to ask qualitative questions that prompts inquiry into the principles of oneness and sustainability. If the goal is to elicit the most meaningful discussion, then we would seek to develop understanding rather than direct attention to specifics which naturally limits the dialogue to possibilities under existing views. Just as oneness needs to be inclusive in order to honor the diversity in life, sustainability needs to include an openness to new possibilities as opposed to an emphasis on preservation alone.

Thanks Mark. I agree about pointing to principles connected to oneness and sustainability.

There are a few questions I've drafted related to respect (for land and each other). Can you suggest other principles? Can you suggest some actual questions we might use?

I have already started sketching out the film fest program and discussion questions. See it here.

From experience, I've found that it works best to screen around 3 films and then give people a break. So I'm grouping the films in 15-30 minute chunks plus time for discussion after each group of films.

Please take a look at the lineup, and if you can offer specific questions, reply in this thread or just add them directly in to the wiki.

I really appreciate everyone's feedback!
