Sustainably Growing the Local Food Economy

Reinforcing and Developing the Web of Relationships

Locally directed spending supports a web of relationships that serves to restore the land and regenerate community.  Locally directed spending by consumers more than doubles the number of food dollars circulating among businesses in our communities.   A shift of 20% of our food dollars into locally directed spending would result in a nearly half billion doll ...learn more

One of the challenges in doing a research project is the perception that research is not very useful. The report Why Local Linkages Matter: Findings from the Local Food Economy Study (see resource links for a copy of the report) represents a considerable investment of my time and the time of the many study participants. It would be great to get feedback on the following questions both for shaping future studies and for making the case for hands-on applied research studies such as the Local Food Economy Study. Thanks so much.

In what ways is this research useful to you?

What other questions regarding the local food economy, or community economies in general, would you like to see research on?

I have to send thanks to you for the research - I am fully aware of what goes into this kind of document. I am research librarian whose work intersect with rural development and sustainable agriculture. Not only is this report useful, it is needed. It is this type of research and reporting that can be distributed to commissioners and land use advocates alike. It is a find for me for that particular purpose as I am fairly involved in land use planning and agricultural initiatives that are intended to stop sprawl and invest in local infrastructure and local economy.

It also provides ready made copy (properly contextualized, of course!) for those working at the grassroots level that don't have the expertise to make and draw the conclusions that are supported in the work. It is a great framework for all the LOCAL FIRST work that I do, and it elucidate the main points of LOCAL FIRST philosophy so much more eloquently than I ever did!

It is also a very good edcuational resource for me in my work of reinvigorating the possibilities of my regional currency (mine is the cascadian).

I will be posting this report as a resouce material on BEN/CEI as a number of their member organizations would love this.

I am always looking for reports and research that show effects of the extractive resource economy model on local communities and of how communities and businesses can transition their enterprises to a more local area.

many thanks!

Heather,

Thanks so much for your kind words.  I am so grateful that I have been called to this work and am appreciative of the work others are called to in these extraordinary times.  As is said, in the end, we will know we all did it.

Deep bows, Viki

I know this is an older post but I would like to see that report if you'd care to post it or reply with details to find it.

I work on national environmental policy and research, local or regional examples and fact and figures are the best way for me to mount an intellectual argument to do the right thing.
