Sophiel,
Your PPT is a great effort to compile the core essence of what I see 1PIE as. This is so important to our success - that we get a really clear and shared vision of what it is that we actually are going to be working together to do.
We might also consider what could be the steps to implement the vision around the core areas you have listed in the PPT slide.
So then what do you see as the next steps going forward?
What also might be a realistic framework for implementing this vision.
How much can be done through volunteers and at what point should we consider funding and also how might we get to that point where we are ready for funding?

Hi Jeff,
The next thing I suggest we do is ask Jenny if she can share a few slides from a presentation she showed me describing all the functions of the IFOSS portal (p5,6,8). It mirrors almost exactly the set of functionalities in my diagram with more details of how they did it. This way we get as a big of picture we can, make sure that all the pieces are accounted for. We will also learn and leverage from her experience with the iFOSS portal and customize it for our portal.
Jenny will also have a better idea of the timeframe and resources needed to implement the complete framework. We most likely have to do it in subsequent phases.
Anyone else has taken a look at the diagram? |

Sophie et al,
4. ID resource for implementation and coordination with TGS 2009 plan
also to clarify, the features outlined in my slides are not fully implemented on current iFOSSF portal yet, it was a plan put on hold for other priorities.

Hello All,
Great job and make a visual picture of the capabilities of the 1 pie site. I feel that is very representative of the ideas of TGS.
One thing that I know has been brought up in on conversations but did not seem as clear to me on this diagram was the way that a common vernacular and taxonomy would be created. To me this is key in making the 1 pie site a valuable resource for other networks, communities, businesses, and people.
Creating a common vernacular within each of these sections, that helps to unify and define the constructs of this movement is something I really don’t see anyone else doing and is a key aspect to laying the foundation to unite and move these ideas forward. It also really supports the idea of being a network for the networks.
I think that if we work on being a forum for the leaders of this movement, and work to create a place where real planning for social action takes place, we can appeal to the creators of networks like Wise earth. This way we are not duplicating the great work that we all are doing in this movement. It is opening the door to allow a synchronistic collaboration that can reach out throughout all of these networks channels and all of the people that they reach, which brings in the connections Sophie was speaking to.

Hi Jamye,
I'm not sure if I fully understand the "common vernacular" that you are referring and is it the same as the taxonomy that I referred in the architecture. I see one of the major "engineering" piece for the 1PIE will be the definition/creation of the taxonomy - i.e. the information architecture that we will use to organize and store things. In a non-technical usage, this will become the common language that we refer to the same thing which may currently have various way of expressing it hence require lots of human processing to interpret the real meaning as well as connecting the dots.
Can you provide a few examples? also is this per-sector based? for example if we say Sustainalbe Development contains four pillars Environment, Social, Economic, Culture these indeed translate to different actions for differnet sectors ... or do you mean something else?

Thanks Jenny for sending out the agenda and call info for tomorrow's meeting. I am copying the agenda in this discussion for others to comment.
1PIE group call #2 on Thursday Dec. 4th at 4PM PST 1. Overall use experience for interaction across collaborative groups
2. Decision architecture ( modeling
framework for idea flow, decision follow through, governance etc).
This may evolve to become a standard or common vernacular
3. Technology Architecture (actual IT development and security measures etc)
4. The citizen voting system and how data is captured, archived, retrievable etc.
To continue the discussion on the "vernacular", Pamela and I were talking about this, where the disconnect seems to be, is that think that there are 2 levels:
1. Overall decision architecture - with a common vernacular which organizes, archives and catalogs consistently ideas as they are shared. Each idea becomes a data point that should be retrievable and put into a framework of a decision tree. This is one form of a taxonomy if you will. It can eventually lead to an overarching set of working groups that break out further and the result becomes a litteral sustainability index,
2. The other, is what an engineer would consider a taxonomy of IT architecture. Which of course has also a decision tree and many parts of codes, and widgets and data management in a classic sense.
Obviously, both are needed as well as the formation of the working groups for that and the citizen voting system. But we need to chunk off all of this effort in phases and prioritize them.
Will talk about this in our next meeting Thursday at 4pm PST.

Thanks Sophie. I could not have explained what I was talking about better.
Thanks Jenny for your questions as well. I look forward to speaking more about it this afternoon.

In reviewing the docs available at our Wiser Earth forum, what stands out are the following thoughts:
Please add any other thoughts or are there any other documents to be reviewed that can further crystallize our objectives.

All,
Wiser Earth has a new update coming out soon (see below). With enhanced functionality for recommendations of people and organizations. They are also in talks to get an API developed. I assume that TGS wants to build it's own solution, but I wanted to make you all aware of the plans at Wiser Earth.
Subject - Group Changes coming soon Hello Group Admins, We are excited to share upcoming improvements to WiserEarth Groups. In one month, we will launch the New Group Design - a significant revamp of the layout, individual modules, and administrator functionality. During that time, we'll provide an option for all group admins to "upgrade" your group to the new format. Not to worry, however - if a group admin decides they prefer the classic look, they will have the option of keeping the existing look of groups for the time being. Keep in mind that eventually, we will phase in all groups over to the new design (within 3-4 months), but we'd like to hear your thoughts during the transition period. In the meantime, you can preview the upcoming changes in "Group Preview" wikipage, and post any thoughts, feedback and questions you have in our "Group Upgrade - Feedback & Questions" forum. This upgrade is based entirely on user feedback, so your further input is very valuable! We think you'll like the changes for the following reasons: 1. A dramatic visual overhaul of the look of the entire group using softer, more subtle colors, sharp use of white space and clean visual lines. The overall result is a more open and inviting look which will better showcase your group's activities. We've significantly changed the layout of a group to draw visual attention to the most importa nt information, using a "rule of thirds" principle that draws from time-honored rules of photography and composition. 2. Branding - The new group will really feel like your own space. We have increased the size and placement of your group's logo. WiserEarth’s name will remain a small link at the top and bottom of the page. 3. iGoogle-like Drag and drop - Group admins will be able to rearrange a group on the fly. All you will have to do is click on the titlebar and drag and drop it wherever you wish. 4. New Suggested Content module - This new module will recommend relevant people and content to your group, automatically scanning the WiserEarth directory for useful information. 5. Groups Module redesign - We will completely overhaul the events modu le on Groups to display events with a calendar view. We will also add a small "plus" icon in the lower right corner where a user can indicate if they are attending, sponsoring or organizing an event. 6. Group templates to choose from - When creating a new group (and only then), group admins will be able to choose from three templates-- each focusing on specific types of group activity common on WiserEarth. We hope the new WiserEarth Group design helps you do your work that much more effectively and efficiently. Please don't hesitate to share your ideas/questions on our forum. We'd like to thank you for provided us with the important feedback we needed to upgrade the tool, as well as those who contributed financially to WiserEarth. This gave us the ability to move more quickly on this project. We invite your active participation by way offeedback and donations, as we are a community-driven project and are guided by YOU. Thanks for the work you do! The WiserEarth team

Hi everyone,
I have copied below 2 emails so that everyone is included in the discussion.
I wanted to get Jenny's and Melanie's input before posting it on WE.
Read from the bottom up so that it makes sense!
I uploaded a diagram called GATE-PORTAL in the file section, take a look at it.
Thanks
Dear Jenny,
I am so happy that the vision I have had for a while now is totally in alignment with your original thought on this. I can't help wanting to create order and flow where there is chaos, redundancy, inefficiencies and a loss of momentum because of it.
See comments below.

Sophie,
this looks so much like the iFOSSF portal that I sketched out backing in 2007 , attached, before even engaging in the PIE.
> The idea is simply to match needs with solutions & information, from the ground up
that's exactly the motivation of the design hence the attraction to me on 1PIE. for iFOSSF, the focus was ICT4SD solutions, the core components will be Experts content, Project case studies and solution Best Practices + services/products brokering. This platform can be done in Drupal very easily ( with couple skilled drupal programmers/designers). The core of Drupal information architecture is taxonomy based with very robust search engine, so i don't think we even need to go with the XML route. Of course, i'm not advocating Drupal is the only solution either, but when I did the research, I spent quite significant amount of time with a focus on supporting such architecture, Drupal seems to be the best candidate.
That's great! The idea is to be able to take the same raw data and output it in a multiple formats for different needs. Write one use many ways.
Over the last few months and the outcome from the TGS2008 I had the impression that 1PIE functions are more than the above, but we can certainly start from the scope of what you have, the key to develop the detail architecture that I laid out in the attached portal design is exactly on the taxonomy design. I have some ideas on how we can engage the experts both from domain subjects (i.e. sustainable development) and from software implementation point of view.
I didn't mean to say that this matching function would be the only purpose of the portal. There will be more to it (citizen voting platform, sustainable index etc)
When I talked to Melanie a few days ago, I was trying to better understand how the voting system would work. I couldn't wrap my mind around the feasablity therefore the end result. I understand now that what Melanie thought was the following (Melanie can't correct if it isn't right):
1. get everyone's profile in the dbase
2. Ask people what are the most important or urgent issues (the vote part)
3. At the next summit, invite experts related to the most voted issues and come up with solutions that can be implemented on the ground (and funders)
4.Implement some of the solutions
My problem with this is that it would only cover a small group of people initially (mostly in the Western world unless we push participation in the developing world)...also this would take several years before something on the ground is seen. For me that's too slow! Hence, the urgency to match needs with solutions in the meantime.
Thanks so much for sharing the diagram, Sophie, the only question I have is on the left most box where you have Wiserearth process, not sure what that is. are you suggesting that we will build from the current wiser earth? I know wiserearth.org platform is also available in open source but I don't know how open their architecture is, i.e. if they have open APIs for us to access the data, as well as to extend to integrate with other applications. May be changing "Wiserearth process" to "business process"?
No, I wasn't refering to WiseEarth as the platform to use, but rather as an example of a place where like minded communities exists, meet and collaborate (the other digital villages). We will need a more powerful platform from a search capability and output that WE. The key is how can we plug them in our portal to join forces?
the other thing is if we plan to use this concept to attract funding, I think the details of IFOSSF portal will provide a lot of substance and this portal can sustain itself perhaps from the initial launch by getting partners/providers to sign up to support the cause.
Absolutely! It should appeal to anyone wanting to invest in projects that truly fix what's not working (like non-profits, foundations, governments, angel investors etc.)
