That's a good idea. I wonder how WiserEarth's API (currently in beta) would be useful for that. Is there an application platform that can deploy apps across mobile OS'es? Java? So someone could code once and everyone could use everywhere? Another thinking was to create mobile version of WiserEarth with minimum bells and whistles. Kinda like m.facebook.com. I think most mobile phones that have a browser should be able to access it. |

I like the simple idea expressed above of showing WiserEarth data on a map based on location provided by the cell phone. Being able to filter the data by type of record is key in dense urban areas. We are working to do the same thing on the main website. Also providing the search bar would be a good idea.

I guess a mobile WiserEarth website, like the Facebook one, would be best done by those developing the main website - it should really just be about displaying certain information on the site in a different way. Something on a phone that could show items nearby would need to be a full application, to be able to get the phone's GPS or cell location. There are several ways that might be done, Java would have good coverage across many types of phones, but to create an app quickly it could be done with Javascript/HTML/CSS and be adapted to several new brands that support this. Might be a good way to get greater publicity for WE. Is there a plan to implement an API that returns items within a radius based on given lat/long parameters? |

At this time are there any thoughts on what would offer the most value for WE - a mobile application or mobile formatted web pages?

What thoughts do people have about a WiserEarth mobile application? This group has mostly been about SMS access and applications, but there are now large numbers of more advanced phones and smartphones that can run additional applications. Are there select use cases of interaction with WiserEarth that could be provided using a mobile app?
One option is an app that can use a phone's location to browse for organisations, events, people, etc who are nearby, which cannot easily be done with a website.
