Michelle Obama is planting an organic vegetable garden at the White House. Urban agriculture is certainly part of a sustainable future: no transport, good food.
For me it's particularly interesting from the water management side: it could be an opportunity to reuse faeces and urine, i.e. organic matter and plant nutrients N, P, K on site in towns, instead of getting rid of them through wastewater treatmen at high cost. It would follow the principle of waste=food, and, provided we opt for dry sanitation, it would also avoid using potable water for excreta transport. That is an aspect which could be particularly interesting in dry regions, e.g. the South-West of the USA or the Mediterranean region. The White House could thus become a beacon for sustainable agriculture and water management. It would also enhance the effects of the community garden initiative of the USDA.
