Mayor Dellums Joins National Climate Summit in Seattle, Pledging to Continue Oakland’s Work on Environmental IssuesMayor Dellums Named Panelist, Because of Oakland’s Leadership on Environment OAKLAND, CA – Mayor Ron Dellums today joined colleagues from across America for the 2007 Mayors Climate Protection Summit held by The U.S. Conference of Mayors in Seattle for an unprecedented two-day event to spur local and federal action on climate change. Mayor Dellums was invited to participate as a panelist, as part of the opening plenary of the Summit, focusing on “green jobs”. The Seattle summit is the largest-ever meeting of American mayors devoted solely to climate protection. More than 100 mayors from across the country representing millions of Americans will discuss the impact of climate change on their communities and the steps cities are taking to reduce greenhouse gas pollution.  “It is imperative to further explore public-private partnerships and federal funding to support initiatives that continue the important progress our city has made in recent years,” said Mayor Dellums. “This is a global issue that local leaders throughout the world need to address. We need to think globally and act locally. Oakland has been a strong leader in efforts to improve and sustain a livable community for our residents and I am honored to represent our city, as mayors from all over the country sit down and determine ways we can continue this important work.”

Oakland has consistently been ranked a “Top 10 Green City” by the Green Guide and SustainLane, two of the most respected national “green ranking” institutions. This past month, Oakland received the “City Solar Award” from the NorCal Solar Energy Association, ranking #1 in the “Large Cities” category for “Most Total Watts Installed”; as well as receiving the Environmental Protection Agency’s First Place National Storm Water Management Program Excellence Award for Oakland’s innovative strategies to improve and protect our many creeks, Lake Merritt and the estuary and the bay.

Oakland continues to bring together the three elements of sustainability: social equity, environment and the economy. Some of these initiatives include:
  • Oakland Green Job Corps – The green job training program will create pathways out of poverty for Oakland residents into the exploding green economy. The City of Oakland is providing $250,000 in seed money for the project – the first city in the nation to commit such funding to green job training specifically for low-income people with barriers to employment.
  • Oakland Partnership – Green Business and Technology Cluster: The group is working on a number of strategic initiatives with the objective of spurring the development of more green tech and clean technology industries in Oakland and the greater Bay Area.
  • Oakland Oil Independence Task Force: Composed of local, regional, and national experts, the task force is developing a robust oil independence plan, consolidating measures from around the world that can be used to slash oil consumption citywide.
  • Zero Waste Policy: Oakland has successfully exceeded the 50 percent waste reduction goal mandated by state law and is pursuing a Zero Waste Goal to cut the City’s current waste disposal of 400,000 tons per year to 40,000 tons per year – a 90 percent reduction.
  • Latest Mayoral Appointments to Port Commission: Mayor Dellums appointed an environmental/community advocate and labor leader to the Port Commission, incorporating public health, social/environmental equity and labor as integral components of the Port leadership and operations.
  • Port Emissions Reduction: As part of its commitment to reduce air pollution, the Port of Oakland just released a Seaport Air Emissions Inventory to allow the Port to more accurately understand emissions sources related to seaport activities.
  •  Green Economy Task Force: To harness the wisdom and experience of Oakland’s environmental and economic development community, Mayor Dellums convened the Green Economy Task Force in 2006.
“While the City of Oakland has made significant strides towards climate protection, we are also facing the tough issues of poverty, crime, and education. We have to find ways to further green the city, while working to turn the tide of the undereducated and underemployed. One solution includes merging these issues and bringing our entire community along in this green movement by better funding environmental workforce development and providing more opportunities for youth in this field,” said Mayor Dellums.  The event will feature keynote addresses by former President Bill Clinton, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York, as well as other national and international leaders in the effort to prevent climate change. The U.S. House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming will also hold a special hearing in Seattle during the summit.  The mayors will participate in a wide range of sessions designed to accelerate local action on global warming. The summit will include real-world solutions for:·                    Creating jobs and growing a green economy ·                    Designing a climate-friendly transportation system·                    Reducing sprawl through smart growth·                    Building a green city at home and work The U.S. Conference of Mayors is the official nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. There are 1,139 such cities in the country today, each represented in the Conference by its chief elected official, the Mayor. #  #  #
