Habib's Garden

Connecting People to Weave a Better World

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Steve Habib Rose.  A number of us met this evening and thought that this group would be a fitting tribute. Lets use this group to recognize, honor and appreciate the many gifts and blessings he bestowed on so many of us. Please add yourself and your reflections.

In honor of Habib's loving weaving together of people into ever widening networks, we thought it might be fitting to visualize the vast network of people he connected with. As we talked this evening, we realized one of Habib's core competence's was his ability to introduce the right people at the right time.

Please leave information about who Habib introduced you to and the fruits of that connection!

Habib introduced me to Lottie Cross and the Black Dollar Day Task Force. This lead to many of us organizing the Buy Local Campaign focused on the Central District in Seattle.

oh geeze! So many people....
jean russel, julie, network weavers network on ONet, deeper understanding of WISER earth, so many people and strengthened connections!

I was looking forward to green October in Seattle, and appreciated all his efforrts and messages out about that. I wish this year the best and miss him very much and feel him in my heart. I have learned from him in the ways he goes about connecting people, as each one was so heart felt*

So many... more importantly, he helped me connect more authentically with people that I already had some vague, indistinct connection with and helped grease some wheels that needed to roll.

For example, at a recent Sustainable Seattle workshop, he took Cheryl Honey (Community Weavers) and I by hand (or possibly via a hug) and helped us understand that should talk more about community building and use of technology. Cheryl had been to Songaia Cohousing a few times, had two daughters that went through the Rites of Passage Journeys (ROP) program that Songaia hosts, and had in depth communications about Community Weaving with Stan Crow - Director of the ROP program, when visiting Songaia. I had a poor recollection of having met her in passing. We chatted, but didn't really connect.

Next another Community Networker, Raines Cohen, took Cheryl's Community Weaving training and shared with me his vision about how it fits into community building more broadly. Next, Cheryl called me with a specific need and then she came over to talk this past Friday and Songaia will be hosting another community builder from Russia, with special expertise in Open Space, for the next few days. Without Habib, this would not have happened.

He also shared his insights about why some of the people I already worked with were so valuable... including some of the people contributing to this forum.

I regret that I wasn't more open to the gifts that Habib when he was available to share them directly.

Habib introduced me to some some social workers from the Watts area of Los Angeles. They were planning to develop a farmers market there and were trying to figure out how to make it work, especially how to attract people from other areas to visit it. I showed them Granville Market and the Chinatown street market in Vancouver.

There is a farmers market now in Watts (103rd and Central Avenue, Ted Watkins Memorial Park on Saturdays), so at least someone made the idea a success.

Habib also introduced me to many other people in Seattle, among others Moin Kadri and several people who are active in Dances for Universal Peace.

I originally met Habib on a tariqas discussion list. Later, Habib, I, and several others founded The Garden discussion list Primarily, it was Habib's idea and he was the motivating factor in getting it started.

I'll miss him a lot.
