Thank you for sharing this short film. It was a melancholy reminder of our human tendency to recreate the very dynamic we are trying to overcome.
My favorite moment in the film was near the end when the inventor looks out the window at that distant glimmer of light. It reminds me of the value of humility, something that does not seem to be very well devloped in industrial culture.
For any of you out there who see the value of humility, here's a question for you:
Why are we caught in the feeling that we have to be the inventor, the hero, the doer, the creator that is going to make things right? |

I actually didn't know about Pangea Day until I signed up for this group, so I will definitely have to look at the videos they have at the website.
Like Michelle I have found the moment toward the end with the glimmer of light to be very significant. But upon watching it again the other day I took notice of the part where the two creatures hugging each other while wearing the glasses. The fact that relationships and our very idea of love may be based on something we created, (and manufactured) even if it is infused with what is real is very big for me.
And I suppose that speaks to the question you posed Michelle, which I would say goes back to the sense of a separate self. After all, it is logical to think you have to be the one to do it if that's all you see, you feel you are alone and nobody else understands. In some cases this may be very innocent, in the film the creature who was the inventor was basically alone. I'm reminded of the Wei Wu Wei quote: "True humility is the absence of anyone to be proud." If the inventor had not identified that sacred substance with himself and his creation, then maybe he would have recognized that it is in everyone, children are born with it. So in that sense, it's a matter of confusion. After all, to think the significance lies in anything we create is rather like putting the cart before the horse. It's as if people think inspiration is just good luck and do not look closer at the heart of the matter.. which is a matter of the heart! |
