1) I think Van Jones had the greatest impact on me. He made the comment that we, as environmentalists, often neglect the human aspect of things. This really hit home to me, as I am definitely one of those people. I have focused so much on helping the animals and caring for the earth (for the sake of the animals - the benefits to humans was just a bonus) and I'm ashamed to admit that I really haven't paid a lot of attention to my fellow humans. Her comments on the U.S. prison system, in particular, struck me the hardest. This is actually because this is an area I have recently begun studying for other reasons and had already begun to realize the ineffectiveness and cruelty of our system and the attitude of "punishment" instead of "rehabilitation" - especially for youth, who still have the ability to "relearn" skills to survive acceptably in society.
2) I attended Bioneers in my hometown in Logan, Utah, so I'm unsure the last question truly applies to me... but I'll answer anyway: The session on Utah biodiesel was interesting, as this is a topic I (sadly) have not paid a whole lot of attention to and, therefore, knew little about. He gave a very objective lecture, with the pros and cons of biodiesel, the various kinds of seeds used here in Utah, and the pros and cons for each seed type. Fascinating stuff. 3) Once again, I attended Bioneers elsewhere. Once again, I'll answer anyway: About an 8 - excellent, in that is was tasty and they made a great effort to use local produce. |
