Got it. Good point about 'private' events. I'll relay the info to Honore so we have it in one form or another in the tech roadmap.

If daily wikipage is a bit cumbersome, then we can make use of the Recent Activity page at http://www.wiserearth.org/recent

Here's the page set to show new events only (Events | active | show only new | revisions only):

http://www.wiserearth.org/recent?type=event&status=0&newness=new&revisions=1

Private events are events that appear in the "Explore Events" tab, but when you click on them, you're barred. Such as

North Surrey Green's bi-monthly meeting

Royal Holloway freshers fair

I just think that some label should appear for them when you're browsing events through the Explore tab that labels them private on the outside, so you don't spend time clicking on them.

Daily updated wikipage sounds really good in theory, but would probably need a lot more moderators to keep track of it daily. I think right now, editors might just end up feeling overwhelmed. For now, I can begin to moderate events, which is relatively sparse at the moment, and if others want to jump on board with the other areas, then the daily wikipage would become a possibility...? Does that make sense? Just my opinion :)

Thanks again for the suggestions on the events wikipage! I will chip away at those.

What 'private' events? Specific to a 'private' WE group?... or, specific to an organization / group of people? Is there an example? For 'private' groups, the default access privileges for new event listing is 'private'.

Yes. I think event moderator would be nice. This would be part of the stuff that "Directory Editors" do. Anyone else care to help?

Would a daily updated wikipage containing newly created records (resource, events, people, groups, orgs, etc.) during the previous day be useful? Happy to create and update regularly.

Updated the wikipage with my thoughts.

That's a good idea to prevent date ranges of longer than a year. Perhaps even longer than 4 months? Also, it seems like for classes, only the registration start and deadline should be posted, because people won't be able to join the class halfway through.

I created a wikipage for the events I've noticed that seem clearly out of scope. Let me know what you think. We can remove links from the page as they're dealt with. I can go ahead and make the changes suggested if there's consensus.

Maybe we should also have someone as an event moderator to prevent these from accumulating. I would be willing to do it for now, since I've been researching events, but maybe someone else from the editors community would also be interested?

One other thing that would be great would be if private events had some sort of label on them, like (private), because otherwise the only way to find out it's private is to click each one. And then you might not remember later... Where should I post this suggestion?

Fundamentally, this is a usability issue. The mechanism to input date and time is very clunky (at least for me) at the moment. So, to prevent future occurences, the interface to add/edit an event page should be improved. e.g. I can't imagine any event to extend more than a year, so a user should be prevented to enter a date range expanding more than a year.

As for existing events with such dating, I'm betting that it's safe to sync the starting year and the ending year. For 'ongoing' 'events', it's probably safer to add/convert as a resource page.

Can you provide a link for such events (maybe a search results page?). Let's sort through them together!

Sm_avatar

Speaking of out-of-scope events, I'm noticing when exploring the events by date, that there are quite a few workshops, classes and launches posted which extend from many months ago into 2010 or 2016. I've tried relocating a few of them, such as calendars from other websites, to resources, but should I mark others as expired, try to turn them into organizations, or what? If a user is trying to just search upcoming events everywhere, they have to sort through many of these before they get to any actual events they can attend. What to do about this in the long term? Any ideas?

Just want to keep our events database as usable as possible!

Thank you everyone for chipping in your thoughts. Roger, how nice to see you again! :)

It seems we have a strong consensus here. So, for starters, I have changed the page status for that event to "out of scope". I've also created a new wikipage for us to work on improving the Directory Content Standards.

Would be great if you can invest more than two cents on this ;-) as it's a very important policy/guideline document for WiserEarth and that no single editor (or chief) should have all the say :-)

Looking forward to work on it together.

I agree.  Thanks for catching this Bowo and as usual for having a solution.

I agree that our content standards should extend to events, solutions, groups, and resources. I think this organization confused "sustained development" with sustainability, and I think it ought to be removed. WiserEarth should not be an advertising portal for an event that promotes a destructive methodology.
Sm_avatar
You are raising a very good point. Our content guidelines should indeed extend to more than the Directory content standards
Sm_avatar

I totally agree and think it devalues to site to have events posted that are not in line with the site's intent & the description should be broadened to cover all site content.  Even without having existing guidance, I think it would be good to remove that listing.

In the new Sign In process we amy want to add an " I Agree to Terms & Conditions" check box that includes a link to the content standards.

Hello everyone,

We have an interesting case that I'd like to bring your attention to. There's this (new) event listing that appears to be all business-as-usual (continued depletion of a non-renewable resource for profit). Not something that I think WiserEarth would want to promote (especially in this Copenhagen year). Please have a look --> www.wiserearth.org/event/view/026fffa32671398381948dea7cbae4fa

But we don't currently have the policy/guideline to handle this in an appropriate manner. So, what I'd recommend is for us to upgrade our Directory Content Standards to also encompass events, and eventually all other record types--even groups.

What do you think?

Thanks,
Bowo
