James (wen2li3) wrote this nice suggestion in the comment sectionof the concept page:

"WiserUniversity might be an easier name to say/remember."

We currently have two ways to facilitate the creation of collaborative learning courses:
1. Wikipages. By crafting wikipages containing structured resources and links, and opening up a discussion thread (or more) to facilitate Q&A regarding the content of the course.
2. Related Groups. By creating a sub-group of this group and have a full blown group features to facilitate collaborative learning for a particular topic (or to elaborate further a wikipage made in step no.1).

After tinkering with another working group for the WiserEarth Editors group: the Area of Focus Stewards group at http://www.wiserearth.org/group/aof I came up with an idea to create a learning course for each of the 379 Areas of Focus (AoF). I realize that the AoF portals, are in themselves a place to learn about key issues within each AoF, but we can create a more elaborate step-by-step learning course which can be linked to each AoF portal.

Just throwing in ideas to elaborate upon.

I definitely hope the aof stewards groups are also places people learn something. We can make it more clear that part of the mission of each group is to help educate others about that topic.

re: learning courses. This is something I think could be tackled by Interns in Instructional Technology. But then again, each steward could be provided with an outline of what an introduction of the AofF should include: how many chapters, multimedia, resources, actual interviews with experts. In Second life, there is an Island newcomers visit where they are provided with instruction on how to naviage through SecondLife. They can contact Guides who actually accompany them and can provide them with tools, clothes, currency, etc. and chat with them in real time. These guides can also teleport newcomers to different areas of the island. Probably many of you are aware of SL. Some of the beauty and excitement of that virtual world might work well here.

Or perhaps we might consider creating a WiserEarth portal in SecondLife..... when we are ready, of course...
