Drums Not Guns announces reorganization and hosts
Drum Extravaganza in support of the
“Season for Nonviolence”
DALLAS, TX - On March 15th from 2 to 6pm at Tenison Park, Drums Not Guns, a local community service group, will be hosting a Drum Extravaganza. Drummers, dancers, children and families are invited to participate. The theme of the Drum Extravaganza will be to explore how we as a local community can use drumming and cooperative rhythms to expand our engagement in global healing through nonviolence.
In conjunction with the Drum Extravaganza, Drums Not Guns announced a major reorganization and a newly engaged Board of Directors that expect to expand the work of Drums Not Guns in north Texas in support of peace and nonviolence by using drumming as a tool to engage at risk youth and the community at large in a culture of nonviolence.
Michael Kenny, MMT, Drums Not Guns newly elected Board president said “The Drum Extravaganza is a way for us to gather the drum and dance community and the community at large to emphasize and explain our mission and to join together in expanding our personal awareness of how community drumming can create a culture of peace.”
The “Season for Nonviolence” framed by the anniversaries of the assassinations of Mohandas Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 2008 saw the addition of the name of Cesar Chavez to the title. The "Gandhi-King-Chavez Season For Nonviolence" offers a 10-week period to learn from the lives and teachings of these models. The Drum Extravaganza seeks to draw attention to the idea of peace and nonviolence through rhythm.
The Drum Extravaganza will include community drum circles, drum performances, drumming games and lessons along with drum making and drum repair displays. People of all ages and skill levels are invited to join. Drums and rhythm instruments will be available for those who want to do more than tap their feet.
