About [Edit]
Six Degrees is a campaign initiative of Friends of the Earth Brisbane that focuses on ways to reduce Queensland's dependance on the coal industry to ensure an equitable transition to a safe climate and sustainable society.
In November 2008 Six Degrees undertook a scoping tour of coal affected communities in Queensland.
The purpose of the tour was for Six Degrees to gain a better understanding of the impacts of the coal industry, both good and bad, on Queensland and gauge the attitudes of affected communities on climate change and the expansion of the coal industry. We listened to the concerns of citizens on the street by day and held public meetings in the evenings.
The report is a snapshot of regional attitudes to
the coal industry based on the 145 interviews conducted during the tour and the
community meetings conducted in the six different coal communities. It is a
must read for those with an interest in a just transition for Queensland to a sustainable future not based
on coal.
Report author Dr John Mackenzie and participants of the listening tour will
present and answer questions on the report findings and the subsequent
alliances built with coal communities.
