About
This is the second in a series of eight practical workshops - Eight Steps to a Blue Mountains Food Garden. They can be attended as a full course, as stand-alone workshops or in any combination. You choose where you need help. The series as a whole is aimed at guiding novice gardeners at their own pace from their first box-garden of vegies to a year-round harvest of vegies and fruit.
Workshop Two is called "Expanding Your Food Garden - Using containers or no-dig-garden beds" and is for people who want some hands-on guidance before they take on a large (organic) vegie garden, or before they have another try at it.
For people who have a limited sunny area - we show you how to make the most of that area by making use of vertical space, eg setting up tiers of box-gardens, or planting along a fence or wall.
For people with a larger sunny area - we show you how to make a no-dig-garden bed.
For all participants - we show you:
· how to use box-gardens to raise seeds, grow cut-and-come-again leafy greens and keep an eye on vegies needing special attention when they’re young
· how to water & feed your vegies appropriately (including the use of collected water, home-made compost and home-made liquid fertilisers);
· how to select suitable seasonal plants (including herbs and companion plants);
· how to spread your harvest-time and rotate your crops;
· how to minimise damage from a range of pests as well as from extreme weather.
We also provide:
· a detailed Guide to follow when setting up, maintaining and harvesting from your expanded vegie garden;
· basic models and easy-to-follow instructions for making frames to protect your vegies from pests/weather;
· seedlings of suitable plants for you to select and buy at cost (about 50c each)*.
