Advanced Enrichment FAQ

Advanced Enrichment FAQ

1. What is it?

This is a two-week seminar designed to prepare the student of health care and traditional Chinese medicine for comprehensive exams, and board exams.  Each week is separate, so may other modalities of health care students are interested in the Western Medicine Week, or parts of the TCM week.

2. What's the schedule?

Week one is Western Medicine and begins Monday June 22, 2009 with Deepa Gleason LAc, RN, MMQ, MTCM, CMT
19 years ER nurse experience, punctuates lessons with real life stories of the ER power point illustrations and a dynamic presenter!

One day per body system, and we will cover all these areas:
Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Assessment & Diagnostics, Interventions & Pharmacology
Cardio--Respiratory, Neurology, Gastro-Intestinal, Genito-Urinary & Reproduction, Musculoskeletal & Integumentary

Week Two is a full week of TCM
Beginning Monday  June 29, 2009
Meridians & Seas, Points, Diagnostics, single herbs and Formulas

3. What is the cost?

The cost for one week is 400 dollars for all class time, and 650 for both weeks.  Room, board and transportation are separate, but  reasonable expense.  This will vary depending on a wide array of selections, from camping, to Yome homes,  to shared hotel cabinas. The hotel across the way from the class site will host triple occupancy cabinas including 3 meals and non alcoholic drinks for 50 dollars per day per person.  Camping on the farm will be 25 dollars per day per person, and also includes 3 meals.  We must check availability on the Yomes and tree houses, as they may be full already due to limited availability. there are photos of the cabinas and the yomes on the google group that links off of my www.deepahealth.com page,
this is a good resource , as my resume and photos are on the site also. From the deepahealth page you can also see video and photos of the farm property, classroom space and hotel cabinas.

4 . Any special discounts?

yes, if five or more students register at the same time, and pay the course & board fee in full at the same time, we will give each student in the group a  5% discount on the class and board fees -- if paid up front in full.

also if the student pays the class fee & board fees in full as an individual by May first they will also receive a 5% discount

5.What are the accommodations?

There is camping ,  Yome homes and tree houses available on the eco-village farm, and there is reasonably priced hotel rooms across the street from the classroom.  The hotel will give us triple occupancy cabinas ( three beds) for 50 dollars per person per night, includes 3 meals.  The hotel will be catering lunch for everyone, and the people who stay there can eat all meals there.  ( as can anyone)  The people who stay on the eco-village farm can join in the community meals for breakfast and dinner.

The food is fresh and delicious, as I have stayed in this hotel and eaten there many times -- it has been voted the best restaurant in Costa Rica by many of my friends.  Most of the food is grown on the surrounding farm, including the milk, homemade cheese and very yummy corn tortillas about ½ inch think! The name of the hotel is Santa Maria Vulcan Lodge in Colonia Blanca Costa Rica-- this is about an hour from the Liberia International Airport (LIR is the airport code)

6. Where are the classes held?

The classes are going to be in the lovely Clinic in
Colonia Blanca Costa Rica.  this clinic has a large room that will accommodate up to 40 students, with plenty of wall space to project the power point slides. Colonia Blanca is about 35 Km from Liberia, in the lovely Rincon de la Vieja mountain range. Liberia has an International Airport and the code is LIR.  We have been getting round trip flights anywhere from 288 to 700 dollars, depending on the time of year.

The eco village farm is a few km from there in Colonia Liberdad.  we will arrange transportation to and from the class site for students who stay on the farm, included in the room & board fees.

Students can rent cars at the Liberia airport, or near by,  if they choose, four wheel drives are recommended throughout Costa Rica  they are practically required for the mountainous area that the class & farm  in.  The farm is at 3000 feet, and the weather is very favorable, not too hot or humid. Remember that it is a rain forest, so come prepared with waterproof shoes and an umbrella. It can get cool at night, even in the tropics at our elevation.

7. what is the weather like?

The farm and class areas are at about 3000 feet elevation, so the humidity and heat are not as intense as near the ocean.  It is a tropical rainforest, so be prepared for an occasional shower.  The rain is warm, and I have found that light clothes that dry quickly are best.  When I hike in my waterproof windbreaker I find that the sweat and heat of it is more irritating that getting a little wet from the rain.  I like light weight easy dry long sleeve shirts, boots and umbrellas.  Sometimes at night it cools down, so some fleece clothes that are warm wet or dry might be nice to bring along.

8. What do I need to bring for studying?

I am hoping that the students will spend more time listening and comprehending than taking notes.  This should be material that you have had before, just a concentrated review, with some real life ER stories thrown in to help illustrate and remember the principles.  I will provide all students will a notepad and pen, and copies of the important power point slides for personal use.

9. How do I register?

Fill out the registration form available on this web site ( in the files section) or request one from Jessica at 1-916-524-6712 or email her at jessicalaurarussell@yahoo.com. Then return your completed form along with a money order for the course fee & board fees via mail to Deepa Health 300 Long View Lane, San Luis Obispo, CA 93405.  We will send you a confirmation and receipt.  You are encouraged to pay the room and board up front as well, but you need to pay it by June 15th to get the group rate.
