About  [Edit]

Dates: 23rd June - 13th July, 2008.
Location: Queensland, Australia

Background Information: A wildlife sanctuary in Tropical North Queensland close to many wonderful tourist attractions such as Cape Tribulation, the only place on earth where two World Heritage areas; The Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, exist side by side. This placement offers participants a great chance to learn more about conservation while gaining intimate knowledge of Australian culture and wildlife. Friendly hosts will ensure a good time is had by all in the picturesque wetlands setting.

Project Aims: The sanctuary's aims are to breed endangered Australian animals, reptiles and amphibians, ensuring their survival and educating the public about their importance in maintaining Australia's diverse environments.

Project Tasks: Constructing a cassowary and eagle enclosure, caring for and feeding animals, planting native flora and building boardwalks.

Who Can Participate?: Maximum of 10 volunteers with various skills and an interest in conservation and Australian wildlife.

Placement Costs: AUD$ 1,120.00: Covers accommodation, weekday meals on site, transport to and from Cairns, IVI travel insurance, and the costs of required materials and tools. A two part payment option is available with the final payment due one week before departure.

Meals: Three meals each day will be prepared and provided by the host. Weekend meals are not included but there is a restaurant on site from which you can purchase reasonably priced meals or you can visit one of the many local restaurants or cafes while exploring the local area. Additional drinks and snacks can be purchased by the volunteer.

Accommodation: Volunteers will sleep in hotel standard, shared bedrooms with bathrooms. The accommodation is very comfortable and secure; beds with mattresses, sheets and pillows are provided. Volunteers may use the on-site swimming pool during their free time.

Visa Requirements: Volunteers must arrange their own visas.
Required Items: Warm weather clothes, hat, sunscreen, enclosed footwear, a torch (preferably head lamp) and insect repellants.
