The talk was today and what a great talk it was. Around 60 people came along. Helen had a lot of issues to raise but the following were the main points:
* we need to stop deforestation right now and plant more trees they are the carbon sinks for the planet
* we can act rioght now to minimise our consumption of wood products, including paper and loo paper that use promary wood products in their manufacturing cycle
* nuclear power and weapons are still the elephants in the room. There is still potential for a catastrophic event to take place, which will plunge the world into a mini ice age and wipe life off the planet as we know it
* the effects of radiation on the human DNA , and other species DNA are disasterous
* politicians aren't listening to us the people.
* there are vested interests putting pressure on all parts of our society to create the illusion that there are no solutions to climate change, or that the only solutions are nuclear power and carbon trading - neither of which are real actions that will reduce Co2 production
* similarly myths being spruiked that real green solutions are not able to provide our energy needs. These are the same tactics that have been used in the past by other industries (tobacco, alcohol) to prevent change and maintain company profits or market share
There were other points as well, all covered in the book " If You Love This Planet"
Final comment: if you feel depressed when engaging with this work, dont panic you are normal - it is a normal process to get depressed when confornted with these issues. It is like confronting a death. If you feel nothing when reading this work, please go and get help. That is the advice from the good doctor.
Helen will be going to the Copenhagen meeting in December and kicking some butt while she is there!
