LAPD workshop in art and social change: July 9 - 27, 2007
For Performers and other Artists, Students, Activists, people working for social change
The Los Angeles Poverty Department is a theater group made up mainly of homeless and formerly homeless people living in Skid Row Los Angeles.
LAPD's mission is to create performance work that connects lived experience to the social forces that shape the lives and communities of people living in poverty.
“The Los Angeles Poverty Department has become one of the country’s most outspoken and profound theater troupes.” -- Natalie Haddad, Real Detroit,
ChangeXchange LAPD's irregularly scheduled 3 week summer workshop in art for social change is back as part of LAPD's year long project UTOPIA/distopia which addresses the dynamic of development and displacement that is currently rocking downtown Los Angeles. UTOPIA/distopia:
Who wins and who loses in the development process?
Who gets to project a vision of the future?
And ultimately, who gets to be downtown?
UTOPIA/distopia is a series of art activities, grass roots hearings and research projects, culminating in performance events. UTOPIA/distopia, the project, seeks to project and inject the vision of marginalized people living and working in downtown into civic debate about the future of downtown Los Angeles.
UTOPIA/distopia project activities start in April 2007 and continue with ongoing research and performance development, and public events monthly through January 2008.
ChangeXchange participants will contribute to UTOPIA/distopia events and development, while pursuing their own artistic trajectory.
ChangeXchange focuses on community engagement and the development of performance work.
* Community interaction includes meetings and volunteer work with grass roots organizations working for social justice on Skid Row.
* ChangeXchange performance workshops are about understanding and articulating your Skid Row experience through performance. Workshops will be led by LAPD artists and guest artists.
Take what you learn, transform it through your own genius, passion and commitment and use it in your future projects.
“LAPD is an imperfect act of faith. Its subject is not homelessness, but its causes, deep in the human and communal psyche. They reach their audiences at a place where our fears meet, even though our lives may be drastically different.” - Lucy R. Lippard, Z Magazine
Nuts and Bolts:
* Workshop takes place July 9- July 27; Monday-Friday, 9:00am - noon & 2:00-5:00pm and some activities in the evenings and on the weekends.
* Tuition is $1,000. Limited financial assistance is available.
Housing Options:
If you choose, you can stay in safe, affordable housing on Skid Row provided for ChangeXchanger's absolutely free by project partner SRO Housing, Inc. (SRO is an exemplary non-profit who's hotels provide a significant part of the solution to homelessness in Los Angeles).
