About
Historically, when investment capital dries up, entrepreneurs and
communities have turned to cooperatives to meet their needs and keep
local economies functioning. Learn about the resurgence of cooperatives
and why experts see them as the business tool for our times. The
program will include:
1. An overview of the Sonoma County GoLocal Co-op and GoLocal First Initiatives
2. A panel discussion with local cooperative enterprises: Alvarado St. Bakery, Community Market, Frog Song Co-Housing and the California Center for Cooperative Development in Davis.
3. Insights from Mondragón, Spain, the world’s most successful cooperative community. The Mondragón Cooperatives, founded in 1956 by a Catholic priest (Father Don Jose Arizmendi) and two of his parishioners, today constitute the largest consortium of worker-owned businesses in the world. Mondragón is a continually-evolving business environment and many of their systems can be useful for us, especially in the midst of our current economic crisis. This presentation will cover the ethics and vision of Mondragón as well as unique success stories that are an inspiration to those seeking alternatives to business-as-usual. The goal of the Mondragon Cooperatives is to create community through economic relationships and to transform society through conscious economic practices. With Philip Beard and Georgia Kelly.
4. GoLocal Member Showcase - highlighting GoLocal member businesses
