Just Giving: Global Social Change Philanthropy

Grantmakers Without Borders' Eighth Annual Conference
June 8th to 10th, 2008 in San Francisco, CA

Since 2001, Grantmakers Without Borders has convened a major annual gathering focused on global social change philanthropy. These events have brought together a diverse assembly of up to 250 grantmakers, individual donors and global Southern activists, who learn, network, and explore collaboration through sessions that cover a wide range of grantmaking topics.

In 2008, Gw/oB's conference will pay special attention to issues of global warming and natural resource depletion. It is anticipated that climate change will have a disproportionately negative impact on the poor in the global South. The time is ripe for global grantmakers and their partners to think seriously about their work in the context of climate change and the equally challenging issue of natural resource depletion. How should global grantmakers working on women's rights, HIV/AIDS, education, indigenous rights and other critical issues be contextualizing their work in light of these urgent environmental issues? How can we ensure that efforts to address climate change do so in the context of promoting equity and justice and enabling the right to develop? Together we will explore strategies to deal with the social, cultural and economic factors that exacerbate global warming and natural resource depletion and how grassroots communities can build resilience and shape societies that are truly sustainable.

The conference will also feature a number of workshops focused on grantmaking practice, aimed at grantmakers and donors seeking to learn best practices in evaluation, democratic grantmaking, and a range of other essential practices and skills.
