Alternative energy/ sustainability is of course a:

jobs issue

a health issue

a clean water/ clean air issue

a species issue (clean up/ preserve environmental habitat)

a climate change issue

a foreign policy issue

a rural community development issue: every community -- no matter how 'underdeveloped' can begin to develop their own energy with the proper technology.  This is very relevant in Alaska where our entire state -- not to mention many of our bush communities -- pay extensive shipping costs to get mainstream goods from the lower 48 or our major hubs of Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau.

We hope to develop:

an education/ outreach program

An extensive video/audio library/ photo gallery
that will allow people from all over the world a chance to witness the beauty of the landscape, wildlife and people.  Our audio/ video interviews will focus on the issues of climate change, indigneous culture, globalization, spirituality, the regions rich history and our future in alternative energy, social justice and environmental conservation...

We hope our journey will lay the foundation for a future connection amongst the communities along the river and our broader global community.  Our goal is to empower and educate while taking part in a meaningful journey through some of the last wild places in the world.

dated information below: going with a more simple set-up for this initial stage of the trip.

There are a handful of methods for uploading text, images, audio and video to the web while in remote locations. In North America the options range from a basic setup all the way up to highspeed, mobile office.  If things do not come together we will just upload when we hit villages with internet access...

Opt 1:
The Inmarsat BGAN satellite system and an ultra portable highspeed satellite dish manufactured by Hughes. With this setup and a laptop, you can do just about anything you'd like including streaming video conferences, large files (images, video, etc.), surf the web and send/receive email.

This setup runs about $400/mth and if you have it in your budget AND you need highspeed internet it is an awesome solution.

Opt 2:
If on the other hand you want to send/receive basic text email, upload images/text and do audio dispatches:
Using the Iridium 9505A satellite phone and a Windows Mobile based PDA (HP iPaq) you can send emails with images attached and text for posting on a website or to a blog if you install some extra software on the PDA.

To transmit an audio dispatch (podcast) the easiest method is to find a voicemail system (Vonage for example) that allows you to call in, leave a voicemail and then send that voicemail via email to someone in your "basecamp" for editing and posting. The reason for going this route is that is it far cheaper to make a 2 minute call then to upload an audio file via satphone internet.

The above is a lot to take in, but if you surf around www.humanedgetech.com

We are additionally looking for partnerships in other ways... everything from creative financial support, to online basecamp managers, to prospective expedition members... who have a background in working effectively in small group settings in remote locations in extreme weather, self-sufficiency,  positive mental attitude, organizing expedition economics/ logistics, education/ outreach, public speaking, photography, film, people skills, developing/ managing non-profits etc. x million: email for details.  (these are not jobs...)  We will be sure to develop a much more comprehensive presence here over the next month plus prior to departure.
