Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is still at an incipient stage in Brazil, and there are many exciting efforts underway to promote and institutionalize the use of mediation as a necessary aspect of Access to Justice initiatives and the Rule of Law. Ms. Gabriela Asmar, a Brazilian lawyer and mediator will present the findings of a soon-to-be published study conducted together with the University of Saint Thomas in Minneapolis on the current status of ADR in Brazil. The study convened a wide range of opinion makers in Brazil, including disadvantaged communities, law students and professors, judges, lawyers, businesses and NGOs. Ms. Asmar will also conduct a discussion with the audience on current efforts to promote alternative dispute resolution in different sectors of the country, including the judiciary, private sector, and communities.
Gabriela Asmar has served as a mediator in corporate, family, criminal and community conflicts with such institutions as the Rio de Janeiro Court System and the Harlem Justice Center (NY, US) and as a private practitioner. She has been responsible for multidisciplinary teams designing social and environmental responsibility projects, implementing business strategies and public policies in different sectors in Brazil. She has worked in prestigious Brazilian law firms and internationally as a foreign associate in a NY law firm. Since 2007, she has dedicated herself exclusively to the development of Mediation in Brazil. She is a mediation professor and has put theory into practice working on various UNDP projects. She was one of the founders of the Mediation Commission at the State Bar and has been involved in the discussions of public policies on Mediation within the Court System and the Legislative Power. Ms. Asmar currently acts as the ACR Conflict Resolution Network Coordinator for Brazil (an initiative of the International Section).
