How to Be an Agent of Change in Your Circle of Influence
Wednesdays, April 23, April 30, May 7, May 14, and June 11, 2008 – 7:00 to 8:45 pm
Presenters: Jeanne or Dick Roy and a co-presenter
Each of us is a member of numerous circles of influence, such as a workplace, neighborhood, club or organization, school, center of faith, extended family, condominium association, etc. Each circle provides a natural arena for the work of the change agent seeking to create a more sustainable culture. In the broader community, such as the City of Portland or the State of Oregon, the culture is a composite of the values, attitudes, and habits of its citizens and its myriad circles of influence. Thus, as an agent of change works within a confined circle, the agent is also pulling the broader community along the path of sustainability.
This class covers the theory, practice, and tools of a change agent working within a chosen circle of influence. Each participant will select one circle of influence, develop a strategy and plan for change, and take steps of early implementation, in consultation with other members in the class.
Specific topics covered include:
- Theories and strategies for citizen-led cultural change.
- Role, mindset, and general approach of the agent of change.
- Selecting a specific circle of influence for work as a change agent.
- Understanding Point A – assessing the full potential of the chosen circle of influence and understanding the key elements of its context.
- A vision for Point B – clarifying either a limited or expanded vision for more sustainable practices within the circle.
- Developing a plan for
work as a change agent in the selected circle of influence with a focus on
early implementation steps.
Jeanne and Dick Roy are nationally
recognized for their tireless work as change agents. As full-time volunteers for the past 14
years, they are co-founders of the Center for Earth Leadership, the Northwest
Earth Institute, and the Oregon Natural Step Network.
This class is intended for individuals who would like to plan and take steps to introduce a new sustainability initiative within a chosen circle of influence. There is no charge for the class, but advance registration is required. To reserve your space, contact Meghan Mix at 503-227-2315 or meghan@earthleaders.org.
