About  [Edit]

Over the past nine years I've been refining my technique for making globes of sand. In five minutes I can teach you the basic technique; it usually takes beginners about ten minutes to make a grapefruit-sized globe. Making sand globes is great fun - and if you make big globes, it's a workout! The globes have an evocative "planetary" quality that has inspired me to use them as elements of many nature sculptures over the years.

At this event, I'll teach everyone in sight to make sand globes (and encourage them to teach others!) Together, we'll make hundreds of globes. Then, as in all my collaborative art-with-nature events (including my annual Earth Day Event on Stinson Beach), we'll assemble them without a predetermined plan in a spontaneously evolving art installation on the beach.

The event will take place on the southern section of the beach. Come anytime from 11:30 until 2:00. For more beach info and directions, visit the Stinson Beach website.

Bring a picnic lunch. The gathering will take place fog or shine.

Carpooling to the event helps prevent global warming. If you want to give or get a ride, email me your details and I'll add you to the carpool group to make arrangements. Public transport from/to Marin City is one scenic hour on the West Marin Stage minibus.

Why am I doing this? To impart a sense of discovered knowledge, to release creative energy, to arouse a sense of delight in nature, to bring people together in community, and to inspire collective action on behalf of the environment.
