Duration: 29th June - 25th July, 2008
Location: In the heart of Zulu Land! Located between Pietermaritzburg and Lesotho in the Drakenberg mountain range
Project Aims: Assist with the construction of the first brick buildings for a large village school that is currently a mud-brick building on the verge of collapsing.
Project Tasks: Digging the foundations and laying the slab for a classroom block. Then completing the brickwork, and finishing with the roof. Rendering will follow if possible. Construct a toilet block. Start construction of a second classroom block. Other tasks may include: establishing sustainable vegetable gardens with composting, mulching etc or constructing playground equipment.
Who Can Participate?: 15 volunteers, and 1 team leader. The team leader for this project is a builder and a past IVI volunteer. Only a determination to assist the local people to replace the collapsing village school in needed, no building skills are necessary.
Optional Activities: Optional activites (at the volunteers own expense but organised as a group) will include: Sani Pass and Lesotho; Durban; national park visits and other interesting sites relating to Zulu history. The are many places in the area that volunteers can explore on foot on the weekend for free such as river and mountains.
Placement Costs: Price Lowered! AU$2170.00: Includes Travel insurance, accommodation in Johannesburg, airport transfer and transport to site in a private vechile. Accommodation and breakfasts for first weekend in Port Stepstone (a group weekend on the coast). All materials, all food and board and transport back to Pietersmarizburg when the camp has finished. Transport to town on specific days during the week for those that need to go in.
Meals: Volunteers will be eating both Western and Zulu food. Breakfast every morning, with lunch and evening meals on weekdays will be provided. Weekend meals are not included so volunteers may go to visit nearby places. On the last night, a traditional Feast will be held for a big ‘’Thank-you and Hand-Over’.
Accommodation: With host families in the area near the school. No power, no internet, no TV on site. A real chance to get to know the locals and their way of life.
Transportation: 2 hours from Pietersmarizburg.
Visa Requirements: Volunteers must arrange their own visas.
Required Items: Working clothes, warm clothes for evenings, sleeping bag, hat, sunscreen, towel, mosquito repellent and basic toiletries and torch.
Language: Zulu/English
Note: As the placement is during the peak travel season it is advised to book flights as soon as possible.
