About [Edit]
This work session is planned to work through the problems and negative impact of expanding the existing Chugach Electric substation in residential/commercial Old Girdwood.
Residents in the immediate area fear a 300' long by 14' tall wall plunked down in the middle of their neighborhood, as well as what is perceived to be a poor use of valuable land in a highly visible part of town right off a major lifeline road in Alaska.
Chugach Electric points out the need for expansion and upgrades on the substation, not only to meet rising demand for energy but to circumvent catastrophic blackouts due to old equipment and one lead line through all of the valley.
Renewable energy buffs support the expansion.
Quite a conundrum.
