Hello folks,
My mom forwarded me a story last week about a woman who spent decades planting thousands of daffodils, with ecstatically beautiful results. The idea is that with long term planning and humble work we can all create beauty in this world.
During World War II, car factories were shifted within a week to war production. As the war continued, nearly 20 million Americans planted "Victory Gardens".
I heard a story recently with the lesson that a school of sardines will entirely shift direction once only 12% of the fish start swimming the opposite direction.
Shift happens.
That we are capable of amazing feats and able to make bold changes is not in question. The question is, what direction do we want to be swimming in? Making war over increasingly scarce resources? Or planting seeds of sustenance and sustainability? What legacy do we want to leave?
The Sustainability Symposium provides us an opportunity to answer these questions with real collective strategies to affect Sacramento's impact on the Earth. We can envision Sacramento as a sustainable city and collaborate on ways to help bring us towards that.
Since we last talked to most of you, the Sustainability Symposium has had many exciting developments. We got space for the event at the Cal/EPA Headquarters Building at the corner of 10th and I Streets, in Sacramento near public transit. We are also excited that Daniel Solnit, founder of the Institute for Local Economic Democracy, has agreed to speak about strategies Sacramentans can use to fight climate change. Daniel Solnit has more than twenty years experience as a political organizer, speaker, and trainer, working in movements for peace, global justice, environmental sustainability, and election reform. Past positions include Campaign Coordinator for GE-Free Sonoma County, a local movement to ban genetically engineered (GE) crops, and Lead Organizer for the Green Party of California.
The rest of our schedule continues to evolve with Sacramento Sustainability Manager Keith Roberts and others from the community agreeing to participate in a panel on what Sacramento is currently doing, and how it can do more, to move towards sustainability. Organic Sacramento was also joined at the organizing meeting by people from the groups Relocalize Sacramento and Sacramento Post-carbon Action Network (SPAN). The former group still has space at their second 100-mile Potluck the evening after the Sustainability Symposium. There is information on signing up for the Potluck at www.RelocalizeSacramento.org . The Symposium and the Potluck should both provide great opportunities to come together and share ideas.
We also still need volunteers. Whether you are able to do pickups and errands before the event, help with registration and set up the morning of, assist during the event, or are able to clean up and shut down afterwards, we need your help.
None of us can do it alone. Together, who says we can't change the world? We already have. We have changed the landscape, the oil supply, the climate itself. Let us figure out together some local ways to heal some of the most dire aspects of those changes. Hope to see you on May 31st. Please fill out and send in the registration form below.

Do you ever get the sense that many people worried about the planet become isolated and overworked in their little projects? Do you ever think that our good works could make even more of an impact if we got together, collaborated, and cross-pollinated? People who are overworked on projects could get help. People feeling overwhelmed, hopeless, and isolated would be able to plug in and to know that there are meaningful contributions they can make. And already powerful projects would be amplified with support and vitality. We could all be energized by a sense of shared purpose, mutual support, and long-term vision.
Come make that idea a reality. Organic Sacramento is organizing a Sustainability Convergence with the theme "Visions of a Sustainable Sacramento" to be held in Sacramento on May 31, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.. We are looking for people to represent projects already working towards a sustainable Sacramento area. We are looking for people available to speak about their projects related to making Sacramento a livable, ecological city, including such topics as energy efficiency, suburban sprawl, relocalization, sustainability, air quality, permaculture, gardening, peak oil, food self-reliance, community interdependence, water supply and quality, eco-housing, transportation, appropriate technology, and environmental conservation.
The purpose of this event is to bring together diverse segments of the Sacramento community to strategize and collaborate on ways to face the challenges posed by climate change, peak oil, and environmental degradation. For the upcoming event on May 31st, we are encouraging community leaders, local businesses, policy makers, planners, local utilities, teachers, and interested citizens to participate. While Organic Sacramento is initiating this event, we envision this to be a community endeavor. Specifically, we are looking for help organizing, available speakers, and volunteers for the day of the convergence.
We will begin the morning focusing on 'big picture' issues related to responding to climate change and peak oil. We will then follow with a panel session wherein different organizations located in the Sacramento area will outline their current plans for facing the environmental challenges. Lunch will be provided by Food Not Bombs and Synergy Chef Collaborative. Afternoon sessions will include interactive opportunities to process the morning's information and to collaborate on strategies for the Sacramento area. Come, let's pool resources to create a long-term vision for a sustainable Sacramento area!
