About  [Edit]

From January 27 to February 1 the city of Belem ceases to be the capital of Para to become the center of all the Pan-Amazon.

The Pan-Amazon will be the territory of the 9th edition of the World Social Forum. For six days, Belem, the capital of Para, Brazil, takes the place of the center of the region to shelter the greatest anti-globalization event of today and brings together activists from more than 150 countries in a permanent process of mobilization, articulation and search for alternatives for another possible world, free of neoliberal politics and all forms of imperialism.

Composed by Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Surinam, Venezuela and French Guiana, the Pan-Amazon is known for the greatest  biodiversity of the planet and for the strength and tradition of the people and organizations that build a resistance movement in the perspective of another model of development.

At a meeting of the International Council (CI) of the WSF, held between March 30 to April 3, in Abuja, Nigeria (Africa), it was decided that the WSF 2009 Amazon will be carried out from January 27 to February 1, 2009 In the city of Belem, Para, Brazil, one of the component countries of the Pan Amazon. Besides the date and architecture of the Forum, the meeting signaled the decision of the territory of the WSF 2009 is composed of the Para Federal University (UFPA) and the Amazon Federal Rural University (UFRA).

Much more than a territory to shelter the WSF the Amazon, represented by its peoples, social movements and organizations, will be protagonist in the process and will have an opportunity to spread their struggle around the world, and make continental and global alliances.

 Choosing the Pan-Amazonia

The International Council of the WSF, composed by 130 entities, chose the Pan Amazon to host the WSF 2009 in recognition of the strategic role that the region has for all mankind. The region is one of the last areas of the planet still relatively preserved in a geographical area of immeasurable value for their biodiversity and that adds a wide and diverse range of social movements, labor unions, associations, cooperatives and civil society organizations fighting for an Amazon sustainable, compassionate and democratic, articulated in networks and forums, building this ample movement to resist the prospect of another model of development.

The WSF 2009 Amazon will be guided by three strategic guidelines:

• effectively be a space where you build alliances that strengthen proposals for action and formulation of alternatives;
• be hegemonized by self-managed activities;
• and have a clear emphasis in the pan-Amazon.

The effort and demand of the Pan Amazon were recognized and embraced by the International Council (CI) and the result will be one of the major novelties of the WSF in its 8th edition, a full day devoted to the theme Pan-Amazon. The Day of Pan-Amazon. On that day, the testimonies, panels, lectures, discussions, marches and alliances between peoples of the Pan-Amazon and the will world also understand as the 5th edition of the Pan-Amazonian Social Forum (FSPA).

Dunk here, writing from Barcelona. 2 years ago we did a radio show to hook up Barcelona with Kenya, via indymedia radio network for that years host WSF space.

I have posted 2 posts regarding news of WSF 2009: IMC-IE | It`s a Funny Old World in which I ask some questions, due to lack of coverage from some main social movements communication spaces and systems outside Brazil and Latin America... Theres also links to live radio, recent photos and daily TV vids

9th World Social Forum Kicks Off in Brazil

Another World is possible! Is it? If so, how?
This post is not a dig at the social forum process, rather a question pondering whether this process is of any importance to us now on the distant side of this planet of suffering. Currently, there is no mention of this event on indymedia.org, indymedia Ireland or some of the email lists circulating amongst those working in Irish social movements and beyond.

How do those of us, many miles away, and in a different sense, many worlds away from Belém view these goings on? Do we have anything to contribute, do we have anything to learn, are there ways in which this process / event can be improved upon? When first it started, many felt something special was growing. In Ireland we had our own social forum(s), for many, both global and local they felt there was hijacking moves being made, at other times it was felt just to be yet another thing not worth bothering about. 2 years ago, when the WSF happened in Kenya, some of us tried to “horizontalise” the social forum process, to connect different communities in struggle with others in similar situations on other sides of the planet, we used radio streaming technology to listen live to others` stories, to a small extent we succeeded. Communities in Barcelona listening to Mary Cummings from the north wall womens centre talking about their story about the topic of “housing” felt similar things at play, corruption, speculation, inability for normal people to get adaquate housing…

The question im simply trying to pose is, does this social forum process still matter? If not, why did it fail? And lastly, if its something which still matters, and it just seems not much is happening in our part of the world about it, what can be done to improve things?

One of the key events behind the erosion of neo-liberal globalization, and the emergence of new alternatives. The World Social Forum gathers every year or two years now social movements in search or implementing those alternatives, to a same place for open exchanges, discussions, as well as more visibility. Thanks Chico for posting this event. I was wondering if it was already posted here.

Hello and peace to all.

Don't forget forgiveness.

Glad to find this page. Hope to be of service.

I'd like to join your page.

I developed the WholEarth System while attending Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Based on the work of Bucky Fuller and others.

It is a very simple way to locate and concentrate on the five elements that connect all living things to this space ship Earth.

As with any complicated problem the first thing to do is simplify it. Then we can calmly begin to work out the solutions to the puzzle.

Our home the planet, our body, our house.

The Water.

The Food.

The Energy.

The occupation of all living things is to provide something of real value to

other living things.

Sound too easy? It is, just start.

Now.
