About

Training for Conflict Transformation
Herbert C. Kelman and Donna Hicks Workshop: Interactive Problem-Solving

The IPS methodology, developed by Professor Herbert Kelman, is an unofficial approach to the resolution of intercommunal and international conflict. It seeks to develop deeper understanding across group lines by conducting a joint analysis of the fundamental needs, concerns and fears of all parties to the conflict. The goal is the workshop is to jointly generate ways to address these needs and fears and to develop a realistic plan of action to facilitate movement toward a just and peaceful settlement of the conflict. In an attempt to create an environment conducive to successful official negotiations, workshop participants (academics journalists, religious and community leaders, and politicians who have a link to decision-makers) are generally chosen on the basis of their ability to disseminate the joint ideas generated in the workshop to their respective communities.
