Converging Storms: The Crises of Energy and Food, Climate and Environment, Capitalism and War
Saturday, June 28, 2008, 4:00pm - 6:00pm

USC
Social Sciences Building (SOS) Room B46

Led by members of Studies for Global Justice, L.A. Post-Carbon, Coalition Against Militarism in our Schools, Community Services Unlimited, Community Food Village Project, Solidarity, and the Glendale Peace Vigil.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
For this event, a panel of activists from varying organizations will address a global capitalist system whose petroleum dependency is precipitating, and colliding with, the ecological realities of diminishing fossil fuels, global warming, food crises, resource depletion and contamination (land, water), species extinction, population pressures, and escalating resource wars over a finite earth. What is the nature of the crises challenging the global system, how are they systemically related, and what should activists be doing about it?
Panelists invite all of you to join us in considering the connections between energy, economy, and ecological crises, as well as the implications for other areas of activism today (eg antiwar, anti-racism, food justice, economy, community, immigration, prison reform, poverty and homelessness etc). We are especially interested in sharing our understanding of how these crises are part of a larger, systemic problem, requiring innovative responses that move beyond traditional boundaries of analysis, areas of activism, strategies, and solutions. One component to this workshop, therefore, is its capacity to encourage dialogue and collaboration between activists and issues long viewed as largely independent of each other.

ABOUT THE L.A. SOCIAL FORUM
Friday-Sunday, June 27th - 29th.

The L.A. Social Forum will take place this weekend, June 27-29, at USC. It offers plenaries, workshops, and assemblies on a range of topics (plus neighborhood tours, networking, and a party!) involving hundreds of activists from the L.A. area.

Please join us for a weekend of building bridges between LA-based campaigns for social justice, environmental action, criminal reform, election fairness, gender equity, political power and cultural expression. The Los Angeles Social Forum is a place where Southern California activists will meet and share power, plans, perspectives, and ideas while building a network for peace and social justice. More than 100 social justice organizations from Southern California are endorsing and/or participating in the L.A. Social Forum, and over 60 workshops, on topics from immigrant rights to informed enlistment, will be offered.
