As a partner in the venture capital firm Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield, & Byers (KPCB), former Vice President Al Gore helps make decisions about which prospective firms will receive funding to expand their business operations. Gore believed that he saw a winner last year when approached by smart grid technology firm Silver Spring Networks, and as a result KPCB invested $75 million in the company.

Last week, the Department of Energy announced $3.4 billion in smart grid grants, $560 million of which went to utilities with which Silver Spring has contracts. As a result, critics such as Tennessee Republican Marsha Blackburn have accused Gore of profiteering by urging government policies and investments that would benefit companies that he has a stake in.

On October 27, the state of Massachusetts hosted the 15th annual Environmentally Preferable Products (EPP) vendor fair at the DCU Center in Worcester. The event brought together public sector purchasers from throughout the state to promote the purchase of environmentally preferable products and other sustainable practices. With the help of their sponsors, Commonwealth Print Service, Dennis K. Burke, Inc., ROVIC, Inc., and WoodPellets.com, they were able to host 160 exhibitors of EEP’s along with ten different workshops. All of these exhibitors and workshops offered attendees the latest information on performance, price, and the environmental benefits of purchasing these goods.

            An important element of the event was the promotion of innovative technologies that improve building operations, efficiency, and energy management. Three of these innovative technologies were Millennial Net’s wireless HVAC Monitoring and control system which allows people to remotely monitor their HVAC system from a laptop or smartphone, KB Industries Flexi-Pave concrete alternative whose extremely porous structure reduces stormwater runoff, and Bio-Cascade’s CAP compact air and water filtration system , that can efficiently filter polluted air in any room despite its compact size. These and many others environmentally preferable products featured at the event are leading the way toward a responsible future for the state of Massachusetts.

For more information on the event, please click here.

What's in a name? At the University of Kentucky, a dorm renovation funded by a gift with some strings is raising controversy. Donors from the coal industry are putting up $7 million and insisting that the dorm for basketball players include "coal" in its name.

Ironically, as this article from the Lexington Herald-Leader points out, the renovation will earn the building LEED certification, and presumably be responsible for less coal getting burnt than the campuses other buildings.

Still, the name makes a statement. Before too long, that statement will probably be something to the effect of "coal was part of our state's heritage." But right now, it says "we support coal, a dying industry that threatens our well-being and civilization."

As the student protests and student claims that "I'm transferring" demonstrate, this move is a huge reputational risk, and as students are increasingly making college decisions based on commitment to sustainability (and relevance in the 21st century) I'm sure before long, the Trustees will realize was not worth $7 million.

Stay going.

Thanks to ecological economist and outdated-world-view-destroyer Pete Sims for the heads up on Douglas Rushkoff.
One of those moments...

Moments where I think we might actually do this fast enough. We might collectively wake up and use some common sense. Common sense to protect our global commons ... the atmosphere in particular right now, and specifically getting CO2 concentrations back to 350 parts per million.

The moment's coming from scrolling through the www.350.org site, after just a day of what I'm sure must be an overwhelming job of sorting messages, posting picture, dealing with press and getting the most out of the epic day that was 10/24/09.

Here in Gloucester, we had a great turnout despite the rain, and got some great shots around the "old salt" - the Man at the Wheel fishermen's memorial statue.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238);
