@ Bowo: SuggestRSS is very interesting. I think release 1.0 of the News Feed we will not be providing recommendations - that will come when the recommendation engine is developed across the site.

Just found this today: SuggestRSS

Basically suggests relevant RSS feeds to existing group of feeds (OPML). You upload an OPML file, they provide suggestion of feeds you might be interested in. It says that they're analyzing 120,420 feeds from 1,490 users. Still in beta. Might be useful somehow for our RSS News Feed module.

Love the idea

Looking good.

Just uploaded draft design of the new module - if anyone has any feedback. FYI: Will probably will be a few months before this comes on line.

@ WildCherry:  We will try and see if the aggregated content of the New Module can itself be fed out as RSS - that would be the goal. It may be technically too complex. As for WE content being RSS compatible - you will notice in the new group modules that there are a number of them that have RSS feeds now - so you can subscribe to them from the group. Hope that helps.... Best, Angus

Good news about the RSS but I'm not completely sure from the documentation if the feeds from WE are going to be viewable in the usual Feed readers such as Google's...or if we have to come to WE to read them...(For me - as I suffer from RSI - the main benefit of feeds is that I can gather them all in one place and get the gist of what's going on in different places without having to visit the sites. Then if there is something I want to interact with I can decide to visit the site.)

I also echo Jonramer's suggestions. It would be great to be able to include feeds from WE elsewhere so others could get an insight into it.

Just wanted to add my 5 stars for this idea.

@Jon: Why not, a separate suggestion seems appropriate. Best, Angus

@Angus: I think you got it right. it sounds like your suggested module is dealing with using RSS to bring feeds TO WE.  I am thinking about using RSS to provide feeds FROM WE to other sites.  Watchlists are personal feeds from WE RSS Feeds could spread WE content to many location it is not today.  The examples I gave are very practical.  I would subscribe to the home page of WE if I could.  I often find great new orgs and resources.    Should I start a separate suggestion to address feeds FROM WE?
Sm_avatar
@Jon: Good ideas. So what I have proposed above is basically a module for displaying RSS feeds. What you are suggesting is a way to subscribe to any changes on any page of WE? This could possibly be achieved by tying the RSS into the watchlist functionality. But is that really very interesting? We will be launching a 'suggested content' group module which will showcase new content on WE which can be filtered by AOF, location, keyword, language - which would provide you sort of what you are asking for. It doesn't have an RSS feed option yet but it could.

Here is where I am stuck with RSS on wiserearth.  I would like to subscribe to an area of focus and take that RSS feed and put it into an a RSS reader inside a group on a Ning network, it is one of the options they offer.

I know there are some pages in wiserearth you can use RSS and subscribe to - mostly discussion pages -- and this may be just used blindness on my part, but I cannot figure out how to subscribe to an area of focus, or to a group, or to the home page.  I would be interested in knowing when there were changes on the WE home page and I see no way to subscribe.  I would like to provide feeds (not just links) to content in other places so people could discover WE and access the content. Am I missing something?  I am still learning about RSS.

Sm_avatar
@ Jon: How would you use it in your groups?
Sm_avatar
This sounds very interesting. I look forward to using it.  Bravo!

@ Jon: RSS Feed Channels will be a field on Organizations and Resources - just under the website. So yes, the feed channels will be part of resources or organizations. The idea though is that the News Feed module for Groups provides a custom set of recommended feeds based on their Group's Areas of Focus, Location, and Language preferences. So finding them is hopefully not the issue - they will find they group.

There will also be a way for a Group Admin to search for new feeds to add to the module and for them to simply paste one in that they know already.

Just as a point of clarification I think its worth to make the distinction between RSS News Channels and RSS News Stories. A channel is a source of RSS feeds. A Story is one specific feed from that Channel. It gets confusing because people often use RSS feed to refer to both.

Sm_avatar
Are we considering treating the RSS Feeds as WE Resources?  In other words, how does a user find the feeds?

@Bowo: Let's get the help of the community to create this great resource!

Great idea! My +1... err... 5 stars.

I like how the module can be tailored to fit Area of Focus, language and keywords, which would increase usefulness and relevancy. Also like the 'cross mark' idea to weed out irrelevant feed content. Would be happy to help sourcing the feeds with the editors community.

@Camilla: PS. We are using stars now not +1. Want to convert to 5stars?

@Camilla: The idea is that they wouldn't have to. If you have/add the module in your group / personal profile it auto-configures to select specific RSS feeds. There is nothing to do except read. The work is done by Editors gathering relevant RSS per Areas of Focus.

The RSS feed could also be turned into an email with links.
