Paul, yes there is. We are planning to make some changes to the search panel because of the large number of entities it has to accommodate now. We will also provide a quick link to refine panel.

Happy New Year! Is there a way we can easily go to the refine search (Search Organizations box) after we hit Organizations in the left hand column?

Re: Organzation Profile
In the organization profile we have a header titled: "Topics" and underneath Topics are links to "areas of focus". I suggest we rename Topics to "Areas of Focus" or "Focus Areas".

Molly, I just tested creating new content with new lines and I got a single <br> per new line, which means <br><br> for a paragraph. This might be a recent change, so please let us know if this is not the desired behavior for you.
thx.

When adding a resource, text entered into the About section is automatically formatted w/a 2 line separation between paragraphs instead of one. I love that html isn't necessary for this text box but would you mind changing it to just <br><br> between paragraphs? thx-

Just posted a job, saved it, then hit Topics again and it went to error message for Symphony. Thanks!

jon,

Your feedback is getting repetitive. The searchbar works according to requested specifications, internet conventions, and the abilities of the search engine itself. There is a difference between searching by areas of focus and specifiying an area of focus refinement via the refine panel or inline keywords. One returns area of focus results and links to portal pages, the other is a way of refining various entities by the Aofs they are attached to. The ability to type in keywords is for advanced users, similar to the way some people use hot keys like ctl-v for paste as opposed to mousing around. There is a refine panel that gives one all these capabilities once they've done an initial search in a standard form. These differences should be documented of course, but I also think that if you use the site more, things will become more obvious. Please refrain from using the feedback page as your personal tutorial. You can email us for that, as we requested of you if you have a large number of points to make.

Kelsang,
User ID is not alterable. It would become significantly harder to track user activity if we allow that. Very few sites if any allow user id to change. You can of course change your real name anytime.

Having strict upper limits in file sizes to be uploaded is nothing new. It's a common validation condition. I don't know if it's really our place to be introducing everyone that uses our site to basic computing concepts. I love irfan view for fast image manipulation:
http://www.irfanview.com/ . I'll leave these kinds of choices to the team of course bu I worry about cluttering the UI in an attempt to over cater to complete internet novices.

If there is time, I would love to add some image manipulation tools to the site so that a user can resize images after they've uploaded. This is highly doable but of course falls more into the category of "nice to have". Also the team would have to decide how ownership of images might work if we can do post processing.

Re: The Search Box
It was unclear to me that selecting one of the entities (areas of focus, organizations, articles, etc.) would filter my search for those items only. I learned today that if you put "city:" before your search it will filter the search and only look for cities with the search term you add. Why not have the behavior be that if you select a filter it places the "filter name:" into search bar? In other words, if I select the "areas of focus" it could place "areas of focus:" into the search bar so the user knows what the filter does and then adds their search term after it.

Re: Search Box
What does the filter do if I select "WiserEarth" or "Linked Websites"?
Sm_avatar
Is there a way to change your user ID?

Also, I got help from Noel in uploading an avatar for my profile . The problem I had was that the image I selected was too large, and had to be reduced. Noel mentioned a great image editing software available for free download. It would be great if this resource was listed on the profile page along with a prompt next to the upload button that says something like 'click here for free image editing software'

When going to the "areas of focus portals" I would like to collapse and hide the sub-portals and just see the top level main areas of focus (44).

Althought I now know that the search bar has the ability to filter my query by content type, it wasn't obvious to me. Perhaps having a link to search help and advanced search can help explain this.

When to go the "log in / register" I would like to be able to check a box that says remember me. So it can autofill my username and password.

The bare minimum I would say is the <br> tag for line breaking, but we're working on a system that will insert them automatically if it detects no html.

I think the system we have right now is pretty decent: we're sticking to a standard that the world wide web is based on, anyone can input data, yet we give fairly unrestricted freedom to those who know what they're doing.

HTML input has not slowed down the myspace community at all, and most of those people don't really know what they're doing.

UPDATE: I just added the system in which if you enter text without any html, the br tags are inserted for you so all your line breaks are taken care of just like in plaint text. This works even if you use our special wiser tags for inserting links, images, etc. So it's quite possible to avoid html and still contribute fairly well (at least the first time)

Thanks Noel- sounds good! We were just looking at aspects of the site that may overwhelm a first-time user. keep us posted on updates!

ACCESSIBILITY: How much html will be required of the average user? How much support can be added to the site so that minimal coding is necessary to be a involved and active participant? I want WISER to be as far-reaching, comprehensive, and inclusive as possible. I think the html help page is excellent, but can we keep an eye on what is required for basic users & basic editing capacities?

What if this is my first time on the internet? What if I've only used basic email before? I should be able to navigate WiserEarth with similar ease as an advanced researcher/scholar/tech professional.

Paul,
Seems like Safari issues. We may need to disable editing on Safari.

We will discuss all your feedback and get back to you.

Thanks.

I added a second image to the site and it went back to undefined. It crashed, all work was lost.

And what's with Rocket Man? ;-)

I would like to help with WISER in any way I can. I am an experienced software developer (decades). What is most needed right now?
