The transformation to sustainability and/as ways to happiness

What seems to be heard most often are the environmentalists predicting doom, and the deniers and delayers arguing that change would hurt us, personally and economically.Recently, we see an emergent understanding that a transformation to sustainability is actually not just about hard choices for "saving the planet," but about ways in which human happiness can ...learn more

I met Habib so many years ago when he came to an IONS community group meeting which was hosted by a couple of dear friends in their home in Kirkland, WA. Habib came for an evening of Bohmian dialogue. At the time there were few conversation community groups in Seattle. Habib subesequently became organic to Cultural Creatives. I was introduced to so many dear friends through his thoughtfulness. I am still so grateful for them. The greater Seattle community network of caring was Habib's garden. What has grown is amazing!. Through the years, Habib and I intersected many times. Some of my favorite times were with his wife Elaine, where I realized just what an extraordinary being she is. So much love to you, Elaine, for all your holding. You are a good part of that of the foreverness that goes on in the the hearts of Northwesterners as well as those around the world touched by Habib.

Dear Friends, Habib participated in Sustainable Ballard's early "tink thank" days of wooly "unmeetings" ... our seat of the pant's advisory committee! (before we became a non-profit). As raw as our beginnings may have been, Habib's thoughtfulness and encouragement helped validate and focus our efforts. I most enjoyed that Habib was not daunted by the enormous vision the co-founders painted! Thank you for believing in us Habib! Love, Vic

I first met Habib at the Art of Community event 2006. I was the volunteer coordinator and Habib was interested in what I was doing, so much that I originally thought he was hitting on me:) Habib is a true lover of people and life. His dedication to community and networking his friends is a gift that will continue to give for years to come.

I will miss you my friend. God speed and blessing on your journey.

I feel fortunate to have had many meaningful conversations with Habib. Countless times he helped me even when I didn't know I was asking for help. The first time I remember meeting Habib was at one of the many Interra meetings at the Ramer's house in Ravenna. Our paths just kept crossing at all the community events. He was always there. I always looked forward to his "double hug!" Amazing.

I am so very sad that he is not in my life anymore, but I know his networking legacy will live on in the thousands of connections he helped bring to life.

Like Craig below I first met Habib through the Northwest Intentional Communities Association. He was so enthusiastic about community life that we immediately appointed him to the Board of Directors, where he served for at least a couple of years before moving on to build other forms of community. Since then he called or emailed or sent people to me on countless occasions. His passing is a very real loss--can't imagine who else could carry on this work on this broad a scale. But, as others have said, we can all carry on our own parts of the network and continue to connect through his memory.

I met Habib in Seattle as I walked in the door for the Wiser Earth gig Dec 1, 2006. I came by myself and didn't know anyone there. He was so helpful at getting me settled in. He drove me, after the event, to my next location. We bonded during traffic. I came back a week later and introduced him to Arthur Brock. He said that is when he came to Omidyar Network. I think he was there earlier. He has been a great friend, a dear collaborator, a wonder brainstormer on network weaving, a champion, and a very thorough analyzer of networks. We still have an open project together. And I can't bear to remove his phone number on my phone, so I see it everyday. And I think of connecting to people as a way to continue to honor such a phenomenal person and an inspiration to us all. Connect.

A flyer for "CoopFremont" on the wall at Caffe Ladro in Fremont caught my eye. I phoned the number and had a good conversation with Habib and met him for coffee and conversation a couple of days later. Over the next year, I got to know Habib and many wonderful people in his circles, through organizing for CoopFremont and as a board member of Neighbornets, an organization that launched some good projects but never quite solidified as an entity. I learned so much about the potential and gifts of community and was blessed with a friend whose quiet but energetic example and openness about his struggles taught me a lot about friendship and caring, and opened up some of my own potential. I am truly grateful to Habib. I hope to find a way to carry forward some part of what he was about.

I met Habib through PeoplesWeb back in 1997. He turned me on to all kinds of happenings around the area. It was through him I met so many incredible people and organizations. I feel very fortunate to have experienced his warm glow of energy. May he shine on through all of us forever...
