Communication between users/email "replies"
Problem: As far as I can tell, there is no way to see emails that have been sent to entire groups/group emails.
Also, if an email is sent to me through a user on a wiserearth group, I can't find a way to reply to that email.
Am I missing something or does the ability to communicate more easily between users need some facilitation?
Elizabeth
Solution: See comments below.
Resolution: Features already exist on WiserEarth to meet these needs.

I think that will be addressed soon, right Angus?

But still need a resolution to email subject lines.

It seems that we may want to create a tutorial to smooth things out for folks migrating from Yahoo/Google groups into WE's listserv-enabled group. I'll be happy to create this in concurrence with the launch of the listserv feature.

This would be great. I think.
I have another group on Google groups, the Burn Green Soiree, with 150 members. I suggested that we move to wiserearth and hope we can work all this out so I can keep the ARCSA group here and move over the Burn Green Soiree. |

@ Elizabeth:
An option could be:
From [Member Name] on WiserEarth: [Subject]
Is that what you are looking for? The sender name is important because people are unlikely to read something that just says Wiserearth even with a subject line.

@ Elizabeth: Please do invite Tara to the conversation. It appears that the best practice fro social network sites is to have:
"[Member Name] sent you a message on [SiteName]"
without the subject included.
Part of the problem is unlike a ListServ we don't want people replying directly back to the message because that won't get them anywhere. If we simply put the subject line of the message in the subject line of the email people are more likely to just hit reply rather than clicking the inbox link below and responding. We have set-up an automated reply email that says their email won't be forwarded on - but it may take up to a day for that to be generated and sent back.
What this conversation really brings up is the need for the ListServ functionality - we really can't make a purse out of a sows ear (i.e. our existing simple internal email system). |

Is there any way to put the actual subject of the email in the subject line Sender: elizd on Wiserearth or Wiserearth Subject: The SUBJECT (D'oh!)
So if the subject is "tonight's meeting", people can follow that. If the subject is "demonstration site wiki", people can follow that.
But right way there is no way for them to follow the conversations appropriate to them. This crowd, which is largely a set of preofessionals, just doesn't have the bandwidth for sorting through each message.
And it makes it a very messy job for me to manage it all.
I am going to invite the communications person for our Group, Tara Hui, to view this conversation

@Angus: Guess that's the best we can do then. Real name?... or first name? (just to save space for the limited length of subject line).
Sender: WiserEarth Message Alert Subject: Message title (from Firstname) |
|
@Bowo: Looks like we can't change the From: but we can at least change the Subject Line to use the Real Name as opposed to the Username. We will also be getting rid of the 'Hi UserName' start to the body of the message.

The freezing likely may come from the memory usage per group on the site. Each loading of a group takes about 18mb per user, so with 10 users looking at a group, that quickly ramps up to 180mb of ram. Per Rehan's explanation, MySQL can only use so much ram at once, so once that happens, things quickly start to slow down, perhaps explaining some of Elizd's freezing issue.

@ Bowo: I like alternative (3) but am not sure we can change the Sender name for each message. If we can that would be far better. I would still use full name rather than username in any case.

@Elizabeth: Yup, I think you misunderstood the "end of year" part. That was for the full ListServ functionality. Changing message sender/title in email inbox should be much much easier and faster to do. Regardless, feel free to decide on leaving temporarily.
@Angus: Btw, Elizabeth preferred option 3 from some alternatives I offered in another suggestion article on this, which essentially is the same as you suggested: Current --> Sender: "WiserEarth Message Alert" --- Subject line: "userA has sent you a message on WiserEarth" Alternative 1 --> Sender: "WiserEarth Message Alert" --- Subject line: "From userA on WiserEarth: [message title]" Alternative 2 --> Sender: "WiserEarth Message Alert" --- Subject line: "From userA: [message title]" Alternative 3 --> Sender: "userA on WiserEarth" --- Subject line: "[message title]" |

@ Eizabeth: How would the following change in the subject line of extenally sent emails work for you:
Currently: [Username] sent you a message on WiserEarth
e.g. Camilla sent you a message on WiserEarth
Proposed: [Subject] (from [Full Name] on WiserEarth)
e.g. Help with 100,000 email inbox (From Camilla Burg on WiserEarth)
Looking forward to your feedback.
Best, Angus |

@Elizabeth: I reckon it will be sooner than that for the ListServ (June?) but in any case, do you think a ListServ would solve your problems of communication? What would be your communications functionality wishlist? It would be helpful to know even if you don't have time to hang around.
For Starters it seems like you want the Subject Line to be distinct in all cases ... that is actually something that might be a smallish tweak on our end. I'll check with the tech team. |

I would love to wait til the end of the year, but ti's not possible. I'll probably move my group elsewhere as communicating with one another is our key reason for having a social networking site. We need to connect with other groups less than we need to be able to connect to people withon our own groups. But my folks can't follow email subject lines because they all say the same thing and it's very hard to share info between us through wiserearth emails.
I appreciate so many features of this site . I am in love with the calendar, for instance. Keep trying and I'll bring my next group back here when there is more functionality in communication.
THANK YOU! |

@ Bowo: Yes, we have talked about a more robust ListServ functionality that allows non-WiserEarth members to participate. I wouldn't be surprised if that was implemented towards the end of the year - and integrated with either the existing discussion module or formed its own module in a group.

If there's one thing lacking in a group setting, it's an easy way to reply-to-many. (Send-one-to-one, send-one-to-many, and reply-to-one are available). Add this, and you kinda have a partial listserv functionality.
Integrate send-to-many and reply-to-many into the discussions module post-and-reply mechanism, and whala... we have a group feature that is on par with Yahoo groups and the like.
Group admins can choose to enable this feature and group members can choose to opt-in or opt-out of the listserv feature (they can always have the standard watchlist to monitor comments and replies).
... this idea is actually a bit sketchy and needs further refining. Just thought of throwing it in here as this seems relevant to the suggestion at hand.
Thanks Elizabeth for starting this. I think it's important to make it easy for people to talk to each other in any way we can. |

The site freezes on me when I try to see messages I have sent.
Thanks for the "reply" button info. I'll pass it on to my group.
Thanks for responding to my query. |

@ Elizabeth: To reply to personal messages click on the 'reply' link on the right hand side of your InBox (which can be reached from your Profile, or my clicking on the InBox menu on the top right of your screen and selecting 'Messages'.
|
|
@ Elizabeth: You can see sent group messages by going to the 'Group Tools' or Admin Tools' button, selecting 'Send group message' and then 'View Sent Messages', Best, Angus
