We've added a new navigation drop-down menu to the site - the Explore and Contribute menus.

Hey, all:
NOTE: This has been changed from the earlier title "Left Side Navigation Links on Every Page". The goal remains the same: easier navigation around the site, but a better solution to provide it has been provided, courtesy of Bowo.
As another suggestion for useful consistent features, it would be very helpful to have a dropdown menu with the Navigation links displayed for selection by the member, the 'hover' link "Navigation" being found in the 'Member' box in the upper right corner of pages. The proposed dropdown is a copy of the left-side column of Navigation links found on some pages.
Below is Bowo's mockup of how that might look. Adding a "HOME" link to that Navigation list would add even more to its usefulness, and eliminate the need for another suggestion--to have a "Home" link on all pages--which I made previously.
As it is now, you often have to leave the page you are on, by clicking the "Back" button any number of times to find one with the Navigation Links.

With the addition of a "Home" link, this is a very useful, practical solution and adds very little to the contents of the 'Member' box. It aids site navigation and improves access to the Home page. I wish I had thought of it. Let's support making it easier to move around on the site. Thanks, Bowo!

This suggestion no longer applies since the lingering-on-top-of-every-page group banner issue has been resolved by adding a pop-up group icon above the navigation links. I'm marking the title of the suggestion with "Obsolete"

Your other suggestion for WEmail by the way, sparked another similar idea: Why don't we make the "My Profile" link to drop down the following items: - Invite Other Users to Your Network - Add Entities to Your Network - List Your Network - Visualize Your Network - Photos - Inbox - Sent Messages - User Settings - Show My Watchlist - View Your Watchlist Activity Report (Simple) - View Your Watchlist Activity Report (Detailed) - View Your Personal Activity Report - View Comments You've Made This would be a separate suggestion, so I've created a page for it at http://www.wiserearth.org/article/5162c98e01bab852cb7f1bc4b88b5893/group/suggestions Hope these ideas can help make site navigation easier and smoother. Hey, Bowo: Very good idea! In fact, I am going to alter the title and text of the suggestion to reflect your solution, and run it back up the flag pole. Using that upper right corner is involved in other ideas I presented to ease/speed up navigation (for My Profile, WEmail, and some others), but it would also not add to congestion there since they would also use dropdown menus. I've added a rough mock-up for the solution I proposed. And perhaps we can also add the "Home" link to the Navigation" drop-down box, requested in another suggestion page.
If this is implemented, then the only place where the full drop-down box should be displayed as usual, will be the homepage. This way, all pages in WiserEarth except the homepage will have the "center aligned" appearance similar to when the upper banner of the page contains a group's description. I think this should improve the appearance of pages quite a bit. Hereby, I also withdraw similar solution for the "Interaction and networking" links in the right hand side (now labeled "Actions"), as that will only be needed for wikipages set to "wide". |

Here's a pretty good solution (I think):
Fold these navigational link and place them on the top-right corner of each page the way the "Other Languages" link is done right now. If one hover the mouse on the link, it will dropdown links to translations. So, folding the navigational link, and label it with, say, "Site Navigation", would solve this problem. Cramming into the top-right corner might be a bit tricky though. Similar suggestion for the right-hand side "Interaction and networking" links seems necessary too. Especially when entities are set to "wide" mode, which will hide those links as a result. But this is a separate suggestion. Thus, my +1 for this. |
