Re-designing the creation process (aka make it easier to post information to WiserEarth!)
Access Privileges [Edit]
Background:
During the editors meet-up, we opened up the floor for the editors to chime in with what they felt were the biggest inhibitors to using WiserEarth, in essence asking them one simple question:
Problem statement:
"What is it that you want to do on WiserEarth that is currently difficult to do?"
What the editors said:
The answers from round the room heavily centered on one issue - it was difficult to create content on WiserEarth. Our users wanted to post more information, but the creation process was tedious and laborious. The simplest details were at times frustrating, such as not having an easy-to-use date/time picker for events, or having too many required fields to fill out. Our users clearly want to put more information up on WiserEarth - and it's our job as the staff to work on making that an easy and enjoyable process.
Our response - what'll we do:
So, in the coming months, we're going to redesign the creation process for content. We'll work on how to simplify the steps and clean up the date/time picker. We'll look into the request to make it easier to share information once you've created it, and how to get that information in front of people who would be interested.
More importantly, we'll actively be soliciting help from the editors and community to review the designs, and test them out to make sure they're easy to use. We know the UI is the first thing to work on - but not the last. There were other frustrations voiced by our editors, and we want to assure the community that those will be addressed down the line. We'll do follow-up surveys with our editors and active community members, and continue to make our development process as transparent as possible so that our community knows what we're working on.
If you have thoughts about your difficulties creating and posting information on WiserEarth, let us know below in the comments. We'll have some re-design prototypes up by the end of the week, and we hope you'll check back in and let us know what you think.
