WiserEarth FAQs for Career Centers

Career Center FAQ’s
-How do
employers and job seekers use WiserEarth?
WiserEarth
offers a free forum for organizations to post jobs, internships and
volunteer opportunities. Employers simply enter their information,
including location, salary, qualifications etc. and the postings
appear in WiserEarth’s job section. What makes WiserEarth
unique is the way in which it categorizes jobs with specific “areas of focus.” The areas of focus are
the backbone of WiserEarth's networking capabilities, and allow users to
search jobs, groups, events, and people simultaneously. There are
roughly 50 areas of focus, on topics like Education, Global Climate
Change, Community Development, and Human Rights. Using these areas of
focus as search tools, students and recent graduates can find jobs on
WiserEarth in specific fields and simultaneously pull up
results for organizations, people, events, and resources connected
with these fields.
-What kind
of employment can students expect to find on WiserEarth?
The
focus of WiserEarth is to connect people and organizations from
around the globe who are working on environmental and social justice
issues.
Students and recent graduates can expect to find jobs, internships
and volunteer opportunities with organizations that are involved in
global sustainability efforts including social justice, environmental
restoration, indigenous rights, development issues, international
policy etc. Because there are so many organizations
represented on WiserEarth, the jobs posted on the site are diverse in
both their focus and location. Each job is also connected to people,
events, organizations and resources, creating a network that students
can use to further their search for the perfect position.
-Are there
other areas of WiserEarth that might be helpful for students before
and after they graduate?
Because
WiserEarth’s purpose is to promote networking and
communication, the site offers infinite possibilities for students
and recent graduates to connect with people in fields they are
interested in. WiserEath’s wiki-based format also allows
members to create their own profiles and groups, and connect them to relevant
organizations. Students who were involved with campus groups can use
the site to network with larger movements after they graduate. With
hundreds of thousands of organizations hooked into the site, there
are enormous opportunities for students and alumni to get connected
with people who share their passions and interests.
-How does
WiserEarth compare to something like idealist?
There
are several key differences between a site like idealist and
WiserEarth. To begin with, WiserEarth aims to be a social and
professional networking tool, instead of focusing on
finding and posting jobs. Secondly, WiserEarth is completely free.
This allows for a large breadth of employment, internship, and
volunteer opportunities, including smaller organizations and
individuals who might hesitate to pay for listing their positions
online. Finally, the way in which users can search the WiserEarth
site is unique, because all jobs, events, people,
organizations, and resources connected with an area of focus.
