Add more sort options for posts, and comments

Edit this Page
I suggest adding the following sort options for discussion posts as well as for all comments.

[Normal | Reverse] Sort by: Date | Average Rating | Number of Ratings

(The text and layout may be better in other ways.)

PS: Such sort options may apply to other WE areas as well.

Kind of chicken and egg situation with ratings - since no one is using it there isn't much to sort to find ....
Sm_avatar
Yes. To me, the rating and rating sort for comments would allow a simple and intuitive way to find both the meaningful/important comments as well as the summary comments at the same time: kind of tackling both of these issues in combination, as they may actually exist in a comment--some combination of relevant content and summary, if that makes sense.

One of those nice-to-haves then :)

Posted another idea on that page that might solve the 'summary' problem.

Hi Bowo, I addressed (I hope) your concern here: "Sometimes a comment summarizes well the previous comments. Hence, if you can easily read the top-rated comments first, it is likely you can quickly get an idea for the best/most-relevant remarks concerning the article (was that a tautology?). Anyway, I just think it would be a nice option to have. Plus it might encourage people to summarize once in a while where needed."

My my main point is that it would not hurt to have these sort options for comments, but they might prove to be useful to users in various contexts. Seemingly, the balance would fall to the latter. It'd also provide consistency for the sort mechanism for both articles and comments (AKA happy programmers).

On second thought, sorting comments doesn't look like a good idea as it will break the flow of discussion and take each comment out of the context.

More options to sort content (including discussion topic) on the other hand looks like a perfectly legible idea.

In conjunction with Bowo's comment and this other suggestion, it might be better to change the above sorting options to this:

[Normal | Reverse] Sort by: Newest | Average Rating | Number of Ratings | Random

Sm_avatar
Yes. More ways to sort content. I would add 'random' to the list. That would allow for serendipities.
