WiserEarth 2008 User Survey - Results
(n=182)
PAGE 2
5. Where do you work or study?
The majority of users (30%) who responded to the survey said that they worked for a nonprofit organization. 24% work for a business. Some of the other responses included "freelancer, self-employed, unemployed, both nonprofit/social entrepreneur and business"

6. Which country do you live in?
Survey
respondents came from 33 different countries. The majority of respondents were
from the US.
(56% US, vs 34% rest of world).
7. What most closely matches your experience of WiserEarth?
Interim results in July 2008 (question answered by 77 respondents)

It is interesting to note that the results between half-way through the year and the end of the year are quite different. In July, ease of user/navigation rated least well in terms of experience. However now it rates much better. 65% of users rate the experience of navigation/ease of use as excellent or above average. I would suggest that this increase in rating relates to people getting used to the website (or similar websites to this one) and therefore having more ease in navigating around it.
Relevance of information went down in terms of user experience. This indicates that users are not necessarily finding what they are looking for.
8. The following tools may be added to the site, please rate their importance to you

Best practices were rated as either very important or important by 84.1% of respondents - since this was one of the most popular pieces of functionality cited on this survey, it was launched in the last quarter of last year (see solutions). At the moment, however, this area of the site has yet to be used much (indicating that it may need to be promoted further).
NGO/nonprofit success stories/narratives were rated as 2nd in terms of importance.
Conference & event tools were rated 3rd by 77% and 74% of respondents as either v.important or important.
Ratings were ranked 4th with 71% of respondents citing them as important or v. important. As a result of this survey, these have now been added to the site as this was a relative straight-forward piece of functionality to add.
RSS feeds were cited as 6th in terms of importance (69% of respondents). This functionality is currently being added to the site.
Enhanced privacy settings & personalized calendars were rated as the least important.

Other General Feedback |
|
- I wish the site was wider known to be more effective.
- resource lists are long and unwieldy, hard to find what you are looking for. introduce more faceted search (eg ngos in country x on topic y) . also I like graphs and analytics! Could be a fantastic resource
- Keep up the good work. Thank you.
- The main page seemed unclear to me. I had the feeling after I logged in , "OK what do I do now?" Nothing there seemed to tell me what were my options. It seems loose and unstructured
- I find the overall layout difficult to get into, I suppose with regards to finding where & with what/whom I would like to connect.
- Too much information on opening page. Not clearly laid out for the beginner user who might be a savvy computer user but who has visited page for the first time. Not clear how to use right away.
- NICE INFORMATION
- The ability to add an avatar for organizations. The ability to invite other users.
- I am a little overwhelmed and confused about all the information and how to access it but this is on me, not on the site's accessibility perhaps a short 3 min vid showing someone coming to it first time and setting up a group, navigating around... took me a while
- I think people are reluctant to post because this seems like such a formal forum. There is little dialog and more just posting of information. EXCELLENT amazing potential if enough people make consistent use of this resource. Powerful tool for activists to coordinate and avoid re-inventing the wheel. Most people don't seem to have scratched the surface in using its power
- A more friendly way to filter resources without loosing the Area of focus.
- make the editor for tracking "invitations sent" easier to find im trying to find if there is a way to search my email address book for other members, and or to invite them that way.. instead of cut and paste.
- WE needs to remember that most people don't have internet access at all. So it would be good if some of the information could be offered in other forms. I'm thinking of some people I correspond with by email in Kenya, they use a cybercafe to pick up emails and for web browsing, but this is expensive for them and it is a slow, unreliable connection. These people cannot download big files or movies etc. They do unusually have a computer at home so could presumably view PDFs & possibly ? film if distributed on disc. We still can't beat the printed word for universal access.
- I'd like to see a place where bonafide green for-profits can also network. There is equally much good coming from that sector. Also would like to see a bit more personalized feel. The invitation method is so dry- on tribe.net (similar profile networking site) you are given a space to give the context for your invitation.
- please add project features
- fix the priority of WE resources
- I'd like to see an "online now" feature where you can see who else is online. I find that if I click on a group, it seems to keep me in that group no matter where I go on the site. There are LOTS of features and I'm still learning, but will come back.
- I'd really like Groups to be part of the relationship scheme.
- If commuication and collaboration are your main mission, how best can you support this? I would rather see you do a few things really well rather that scatter your efforts as seems to be a danger here.
- Seems like alot of energy is being spent on the physical development of the site and its wiki-ness. I would like to see more effort in drumming up support of networking. We are all good at running our own organizations-and the resources here help us get better, but we need to start working TOGETHER.
- this network needs more publicity. It is a great resource but no one I know is using it. It needs to get out there to non-profits so they can use it to build alliances
