Limit on Messages & Comments: 4 per minute +2
Edit this Page
To prevent future spammers, there needs to be a limit on the number of messages and comments WiserEarth users may send.
I don't think anyone needs to send more than 4 per minute. By the third message or comment, a user should receive a warning on the page. If a user adds another comment or sends another message, their account will be automatically disabled, temporarily.

True, this solution will not solve everything. I imagine that the ideal solution, as you say, is to stop automated spamming, to identify bots.

This will slow the spammers down until they realize that if they send one message every 16 seconds the messages will go through - maybe this needs to be thought through with the more technical people. The idea is ok, the only downside is the time the technical side has to spend to implement. If it is very easy to implement, then OK. If hard to implement I wonder. The real solution, I think has to do with vouching for each other and developing a history to prove we are real and not a robot.

Totally agree. Group administrators should be able to send messages to all of their members. For now, I see no problem with this. The same privilege should be extended to site-wide admins, and others (to be determined).

I recently sent a Group-wide email to all [I believe 64] members. This was done under the Administrator functions that WiserEarth has set up. So if you're going to limit messages in an attempt to reduce Spam -- which is fine with me since I've been Spamed through WiserEarth -- I think the coding needs to be done in a way that it protects a Group Administrators' ability to occasionally send out group mailings.

There might come a time though when we'll need a barrier to stop the users who are spamming, but don't know that they are spamming (by clogging the "all comments") section.
