Group Admin Tools - New changes underway

Edit this Page

Update: October 30th, 2008 - Changes are now live on the site!

Over the past few weeks, we've been hard at work cleaning up the layout and design of the administrator tools interface for group administrators, addressing many of the concerns that we've heard from our community.

To help our group administrators become familiarized with the changes, as well as answer any questions of "where did this function go?", we've written a quick tutorial to go over the changes:

1.  Less is more - one of the first things we wanted to work on was cutting down the growing number of tabs in a group, so that it was a cleaner, simpler interface.  We've removed the "Manage content" tab and moved the "Manage Members" into a link under the "Administrator Tools" drop-down menu.

2.  Manage your members - We wanted to clean up this feature, so it would be easier for administrators to quickly sort through their members, any pending applications or referrals to join a group, and keep track of any invitations already sent.  You'll see that we've also cut down quite a bit on the number of tabs used, and we've put the members list into a nice clean table with action links (Edit | Remove | Block) on the right.

You can also use the two buttons on the upper right to toggle the view between a list and a grid view:

3.  Re-invite people - In the past, you could only send an invitation to join your group once, but we've since lifted that restriction so that you can send out an invite again.  To re-invite a user, just send out the invitation again to the user's email address, or through a look-up in the WiserEarth directory.

We've consolidated all the invitations to email addresses and to existing WiserEarth users into just one page.   This will make it much easier for administrators to sort through what invitations have already been sent.  Also, we've put in a "rescind" button, which cancels out any existing invitations in case a group administrator changes their mind.

4.  Manage content - Since we've taken it out as a tab, many of you might wonder how they would go about adding and removing content.  You can now do so simply by clicking the "manage" link in the title bar of each module - it'll offer all the same functions as before, such as removing or setting a record as a sticky.
Clicking on Manage will take you to the below page:

5.  Change your group logo - we've made it even easier to update your group's logo.  Now, all you need to do is click on your "Photos" tab, and you'll see that above each picture, there's a "Set Avatar" link.  Just click on that, and click Refresh, and you'll see your new group logo.  Only group administrators will be able to see this "Set Avatar" option - regular group members will only see the pictures.

We hope this tutorial helps - as always, we'll be on hand to answer questions or discuss any of the changes.  Just drop us a line at support@wiserearth.org, or post your thoughts on this discussion forum we've created just for this purpose!

Actually this page is now out of date - additional work has been done on the Groups since this. We will reflect the changes in the Group Admin tutorial shortly.
