Who is online & Chat features +2

Edit this Page

Problem: Lack of efficient communication between members.

Solution: Being able to see who is online would be useful. Also a chat feature, similar to the recently implemented pop-up chat window on FaceBook.

How I can help: This needs a technical solution, and is outside my expertise

Honore is looking at DimDim. It has both an open source version and a paid version. The open source version is essentially a 'meeting' software so it may not easily solve some of the issues described above/below. Showing who is online at WE is technically not too difficult - integrating that information in the WE UI and making it useful (i.e. in the groups, friend's lists) to encourage communication is the key.

That phrase about "open source underpinnings" in Bowo's description of dimdim suggests that it will take a lot of work to make a WE implementation of dimdim.  The tremendous usefulness of the dimdim features make it worth a look.  Can we ask the programming staff to check it out?  How feasible is it to integrate dimdim with WE?

Who is online ?

Here is an idea from me, a none -technical person, Angus can tell us if it can be done.

Using Google Maps, is it possible to substitute the "map" with a graphic of the WE site, then assign everyone with an identifying marker as they log-in, and then by coding wizardry track them as they move around the website ?????

Shouldn't the "who is online" part be easier to do as we have cookies in user's browser that indicate which users just logged in / are visiting WE? Just a non-techie assumption though.

DimDim looks GREAT!

 Dimdim Key Features

  • It’s Free, Easy & Open!
  • No Install to Start/Join meetings
  • Easily Share your Desktop
  • Audio & Video Conferencing
  • Present PowerPoint and PDFs
  • Private & Public Chat
  • Whiteboard & Annotations
  • Record and Playback Meetings
  • Open Source and APIs

"We think that since Dimdim is simple, it “just works” with zero install, offers disruptive pricing, and is based on open source underpinnings, we are enabling the whole world to meet freely.

We believe that this changes things for the better and appeals to our mutual passion to improve the world. With Dimdim people and organizations around the world who could never afford (or figure out how) to get together can now meet freely.

Honore is looking into DimDim which is an open source virtual meeting software with shared desktop / presentation, video, audio and chat. Skype integration is another option but requires a client download and doesn't look like it can integrate with WiserEarth through their API. Still this doesn't solve the 'who is online' issue.

Just came across this article today. I wonder whether there's an opensource application that comes anywhere near the functionality offered.

Meebo Powers Instant Messaging on Flixster.com
First Meebo Community IM Integration Begins a Staged Rollout to 19 Partners and Over 70 Million Users Worldwide

Key components of Meebo Community IM
  •   Integrated Instant Messaging: Meebo Community IM is integrated seamlessly into the partner site as a subtle horizontal footer. The footer is displayed on the bottom of the browser as the user scrolls the page and persists as the user browses pages across the site.
  •   Friends Become IM Buddies: Users can chat with social network friends right alongside their traditional IM network buddies by logging into their social network account on meebo.com, or entering meebo.com via a link directly from the partner site. Social network friends are incorporated into the users' pre-existing network of IM buddies, allowing instant access to the full spectrum of their online friends.
  •   Live User Updates: The Meebo Web Service API lets partners provide real-time updates to users on Meebo. For example, a partner can send notifications to users about their friends' activity on the network.
  •   Integration with Registration Systems: Meebo's instant messaging capabilities seamlessly integrate with the partner's registration system. Meebo Community IM brings live communication to the user's existing social graph. No additional account signup is required.
  •   Best in Class Web IM: Meebo Community IM includes many popular features familiar to users of meebo.com. Examples include emoticons, timestamps, buddy icons, sound toggling, and status messages.
  • User Presence: Partners can leverage presence information from Meebo to display user presence across their network. Users can visit profiles and see whether or not their friends are online, and initiate a conversation. For partners, Meebo handles the difficult task of managing presence for their users.

In the mean time, we have this simple IRC chat room where anyone can easily join

@ Fschlomka: Totally agree that we need chat / a way to see who is online. All of the communications tools on WiserEarth are asynchronous - which is a problem. We need to have synchronous text (chat), voice (skype?), and video (skype?) as options to help people work together in real time. This will help build a sense of community.

Yes. Good idea! This would be very nice to have.

May need to allow users to appear "offline/invisible" as not everyone wishes to be seen when they're around.

Thanks for suggesting this Fred. My +1and four stars for combining "who's online" and "live chat" feature as one solution.
