One night in Paris with WiserTuesdays: Since WiserEarth’s vision is to support networking and collaboration among nonprofits and social change organizations, we knew we needed to walk the talk by joining an existing series of events. As a result, WiserTuesdays were launched as a collaboration between NetSquared and WiserEarth. They are based on NetTuesday events which take place in more than 50 cities around the world. Here is an update on our first meeting. Feel free to contact us if you have any comments or ideas on future blog posts: angus [at] wiserearth.org

Say No to Zombie Groups: Building a vibrant online community is hard work. It’s so easy these days to start online groups – for example, a few clicks and you can have a working group on WiserEarth. So what do you do if you start to think your community-building effort is going nowhere fast? You have lots of options – so don’t be antisocial and leave a ‘zombie’ group out there. Help send WiserEarth to Atlanta, Georgia next spring! We’ve entered four panels for the Nonprofit Technology Conference 2010. Please vote for your favorite idea!

NTEN’s Nonprofit Technology Conference 2010 (NTC ‘10) takes place April 8-10, 2010. It’s the place for nonprofits to learn how to use technology effectively. We’ve entered four proposals ranging from social fundraising to community engagement, and now it’s time to vote!

Give us your feedback: The WiserEarth blog has been running for six months and we thought it was time to find out what you think. So we’ve got a simple poll for you. Let us know what you would like to see more of in the future. And whatever other feedback you want to leave, positive or negative, just make a comment. Thank You. Don’t over invest in your website: Let’s face it, it’s easy for a nonprofit to get seduced by the latest web technology and distracted from their actual mission. This is even more the case with open source tools like Joomla!, Drupal, and Plone that promise free social websites at the touch of a button. What many people don’t realize is the cost of customizing some of these so-called free tools often runs around $40,000 in consultant fees and staff time. On top of that you are saddled with ongoing maintenance and hosting costs. Running your own souped-up website appeals to many because it implies control and ownership. But does this really help you in today’s social web? Here is a checklist to review before you take the plunge. Feel free to contact us if you have any comments or ideas on future blog posts: angus [at] wiserearth.org

Do you have the right mindset for social media?:The folks over at The Monitor Institute have been working with The Packard Foundation to explore this question. Their conclusion? Don’t worry so much about the social media tools and instead realize that you are building a social network. To do that you need a ‘networked mindset’ characterized by ‘openness, transparency, decentralized decision-making, and distributed action’. We encourage you to read the full paper ‘Working Wikily 2.0′ but here is a summary of the more important points for people working in the social sector. What network stage is your community?: We’ve written before about how you can view your community as a network. How to weave a tighter community: All communities can be summed up as people who know each other and do things together. As a general rule, know more people in their community, both they and their communities are more productive. So how do we go about increasing those connections between people? Increasingly, community leaders are turning to ‘Network Weavers’. Feel free to contact us if you have any comments or ideas on future blog posts: angus [at] wiserearth.org

Should I formalize my project as an NGO?: Several informal communities on WiserEarth have grown to the size that they want to raise money and become formal non-profit organizations. Here is some advice on options to consider before you take the plunge. You may well find, like the NorCal Rainwater Catchment Association, you are better off becoming a fiscally sponsored project. Does an online community need governance?: If your community is going to be around for more than a year you need to start thinking about governance. Governance is not about managing the day-to-day of a community but rather providing guidance over purpose and goals, much like a board does for a well run non-profit organization. Ignore governance and over time members will feel that their voices are not being heard and they will vote with their feet and leave. A few of you may have noticed that WiserEarth seemed to be down for the past day or so, and perhaps received cryptic Server error 500 messages when trying to access WiserEarth.  We were performing some site maintenance and ran into server issues.  Our tech team has been hard at work figuring out what happened and are still actively checking through our server logs to make sure we don't overlook any issues.

This may actually turn out to be beneficial in the long run for WiserEarth - our tech team has already found ways to optimize our server code, and this should result in improved site performance and reliability.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email them to support@wiserearth.org.  We'll be happy to field any questions and respond as soon as we can.

As our site has grown, so has some mischievous spammers who are looking to hawk their wares or sell their schemes.  We've put in place several new anti-spam security measures to limit this sort of intrusion into our inboxes, so this should hopefully cut down on any spam mail sent to your inbox.

We have also added 'Italian | Italiano' to the list of 12 languages that you can specify your content is written in.

We've just launched the WiserEarth blog. WiserEarth is in the business of ‘connecting people to communities of action’. Along the way we realized that people need help creating and managing these communities, especially when they have a significant portion of their life ‘online’ as opposed to ‘onlife’. This blog will showcase examples of successful community building and some of the learning we have picked up along the way while advising community managers and supporting the wider WiserEarth membership of over 20,000 people. If you are looking for specific help on community building look at our resources pages.

WiserEarthers living in France gathered last week from various organizations including the Nicolas Hulot Foundation, Colibris, Mondeca, Swoord, Net Impact and many others. Each participant shared how they were contributing to a “Wiser Earth” by describing their work. The evening was spent discussing strategies and getting acquainted. This marked the first of a regular series of gatherings. The meeting convener, Camilla, said, “It was a great experience – and so exciting to see so many enthusiastic members of WiserEarth in the room at one time… I’d definitely recommend the creation of more local groups in different parts of the world.” Find people living in your area and create your own regional gathering!

ShareThis is now available on the site!

Some of you may have already noticed the rotating icon right under the "Actions" bar.  If you click on it, it'll pop up a little window, allowing you to "share" that page with a number of popular social content sites, like Digg.com, Facebook, Del.ici.ous, and Technorati.  This is a great way for WiserEarth users to connect their work from WiserEarth to their profiles on other sites, without ever having to skip a beat.

You'll also notice there's another two tabs - "Posts" and "Send/Email". Post allows you to add the page to your blogs, such as Twitter, WordPress, and Blogger.  Send/Email allows you to email the page out directly to your friends and family.

Overall, ShareThis is a pretty fast and easy process to spread awareness of a page - we hope members of our community wil put this tool to good use!

I am fascinated being a member of this global community of volunteers. Indeed the selfless service of individuals for the wellbeing of others is the only sure way to peaceful co-existence.

I will make special mention of WiseEarth at the upcoming World Peace Congress in Malaysia where I will be presenting a paper on the topic: Reprogramming Volunteers Towards Peace-Building in a Democratic Setting
