Protecting Personal Information

This article is locked
WiserEarth creates a space for people from all over the world to share information freely about themselves and connect with others. This is a unique and empowering opportunity, but also one that people could abuse. So please be aware that any information you choose to share publicly, is, well... public. Below are a few ways we can maintain the integrity of WiserEarth.

In order to create or edit content on WiserEarth, you must first register with WiserEarth and login to your account. Personal information such as your username, your full name, an optional profile photo, and any other information you decide to add to your personal profile will be visible to other users. Others can see any information you share when they visit your profile page. When you post a comment, make an edit, or send an internal message, your name and photo (if you've included one in your profile) will accompany this edit.

Please follow these guidelines when you create/update your personal profile:

  • Do not post any information you would not want the world to know about (e.g., phone number, personal street address, voice messenger).
  • Be aware of phishing. Phishing is when someone uses fraudulent techniques to get your personal information by pretending to be someone you trust. Phishing is usually carried out using email or instant message and often directs users to a website. Please be aware that other people using the messaging service on WiserEarth may not be who they say they are.
  • If you would like to register on the site, but are concerned with sharing personal information about yourself, you will be able to register with a username and full name which is different from your real name.
