Additional resource types / or specify other +1

Edit this Page

As I have begun to upload resources, I often find that there is not a satisfactory resource type available, and if I select Other, I am not able to specify what the other is - e.g. digital library, digital art, photograph collection, and to be able to distinguish between audio and video / flash, music or spoken word.

Would it be possible to allow specification of other - e.g. as in Relationship. As and when clusters of similarly worded types emerge, they could be added to the selectable list, and users could be encouraged to adopt a common type.

@Honore: Sounds good.

@Angus: It seems like this suggestion is a duplicate, or should be merged, with your suggestion. I suggest the following suggestion be wrapped up in yours as well: http://www.wiserearth.org/article/e74adcd9a9475eba4d2168de0c64c5c9 Then, perhaps these other suggestions can be retired or something.

Reality is very few people are using advanced search and using this information - I made a suggestion to

Rationalize Resource Type list.

@sjcjedi - Probably not, cause in the past, we've heard similar requests to add this or that to the resource list.  it's very much like custom tags - with as many users as we have, everyone has a certain perspective on what's the best label for a category.  Adding 3 or 4 is unlikely to encompass enough to stem future requests.  What I'd ideally like to see is that if we offer a text field for users to enter the "other" types, we log those carefully and use them to later form an auto-complete drop-down menu for all future entries.  If we see that certain custom types are rising in popularity, then we can move those over into the permanent list.

Perhaps just adding a few of the most common types that are not currently handled might suffice...

Jon Ramer suggested something along similar lines, when he asked to have "Building" put into the resource type list.  I do believe we should add in a option to allow a user to specify the resource type when they choose other, as Robert suggested above.  +1 from me.

Thank you for suggesting this Robert. While I think we should keep the resource types to a minimum, allowing people to specify in 'Others' makes sense. I suppose we'd want to show the text typed in there to show on group's resource module too?... as Others (specified type). We can review later on as to what 'other' type of resources that users created and manually add it to the list if needs be. I wonder what others think?

p.s. I'm transferring this article from Help Desk to WiserEarth Suggestions.
