Focusing on Use of Our Current Sun

Here are the four postulates to sustainable energy production/use.     The sun is our sole sustainable energy source (PV, solar heat, wind, water, biofuels, etc). We live in a closed environmental system. It matters what we do here in our environment, Earth. Humans are very clever. If the two postulates above are followed as design constraints, we can move ...learn more

"Invite" link more prominent, more places +9

Edit this Page

I believe that we must make invite others into WE seamless and easy, even elegant, enabling people to bring their networks into the fold.  This should take the form of a link on my page and within my groups; in multiple places.  I may be in a certain area of focus or group and all of a sudden someone may come to mind and I want them to participate in THIS conversation or this group.  Such improvements will provide for mroe organic and self-organizing community growth.

Let's make it easy and fluid.

Right now, I can barely find the place to invite people and it feels inefficient to me.

Seems like a good place. Invitation is in a way "adding people". For the exact position, perhaps below "Add an organization"? This should make it consistent with the "Browse" section.

What should the text be? "Invite a friend"? "Invite people"?

How about placing 'Invite a friend' under the Edit section in the left hand bar? That seems the most logical place - its where I first went to look. It's also always present.

Hi Tony,

There's a suggestion page relating to this: Including For-Profit and Public Agencies on WE

We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comment section of that page.

There are many development role-players and social entrepreneurs who are making valuable contributions to a wiser earth, would they be able to link documents and even company profiles to expose what they do to WE networks?

Sm_avatar
Cool, this does go hand in hand with our current efforts to improve the look and feel of the website, and inviting people to join you on WE is definitely important.  I'm glad for this flow of ideas!  Please keep them coming, and we'll try to implement them into our new designs as much as possible.

How about the left hand side bar with a big heading "Invite a Friend" and under that only one option: "Invite"?  It could go at the bottom, under Help.  Important options should have a place and always be available.

Hey, all:

Two thoughts on placement of added "Invite to WE" links, both of which could be used simultaneously. One could easily be placed next to the name and photo on the signed-in member's Profile page. This is very prominent and would only appear in that specific condition. Since it is next to the member's name and photo, it immediately serves to remind the member.

Another location is related to the drop-down menu suggestion made by Bowo, which uses the links in the member's block in the upper right corner of pages. These links are always visible to the signed-in member and would include all the links Bowo suggested, and should include an "Invite to WE" link.

A simple text reminder could also be used to direct members to this proposed drop-down menu, placed on group pages and Discussion forums--something like "Hover over "My MemberTools" in upper right corner to invite others."

I think these ideas are relatively easy to accomplish, with very little added complexity or programming, since serious changes would be more difficult and impractical.

We originally had the invite links on the right hand sidebar, but over time, it seemed none of our users were able find it, nor knew of it. This suggestion is really more of a UI (user interface) issue, and unfortunately, because we don't have a full-time UI designer on our staff, it's not something we have expertise in.

I agree with the suggestion - our invite link is rather buried within our network module. The question is, where else is a good place to put it? :) This is something I'll have to talk about with Adam, as he has far better design skills than I do. In the meantime, I'm open to hearing ideas about its placement from everyone. :)

Hey, all:

Yeah, this is a good idea, and I am demanding, too. I'll bump up the tally.

I think there probably cannot be too many places and ways to easily invite people into WE, into Groups, into discussions, etc. Good idea. The broader and deeper the membership, the stronger the network.

Maybe the next most needed tool is one to get members already signed up to become ACTIVE! The well must be very deep, but so far, a stone dropped into it produces little or no sound.

I have discussed this elsewhere. It would be great if all the entities on WE had a link on the action pane to the right (I think that's what it's called) to invite someone to join/apply/discuss/attend/etc. this group/organization/job/forum/event/etc. This would allow WiserEarth to function like eVite, as a recruiting tool and as a more fully integrated hub of online activity generally.

Technical concerns? Suggestions?
Sm_avatar
Totally agree. Great idea.

we should make the invite link stand out more at the least, yes. This is in the works.
