Sort suggestions on rating better

Edit this Page

On the feedback/suggestions page,

http://www.wiserearth.org/group/suggestions

(which is just titled "WiserEarth Suggestions"), the Top-rated suggestions link on the right, takes you to a page sorting the suggestions based on rating average, but the number of ratings does not appear to be taken into account. I suggest the following scheme for sorting based on ratings.

Order factor 1: The average rating score (from highest to lowest)

Order factor 2: The number of ratings (from highest to lowest)

That way the user will see the suggestions that have the highest rating that have been voted on the most. For example,

  1. Average rating: 5.0 stars, voted on 7 times
  2. Average rating: 5.0 stars, voted on 3 times
  3. Average rating: 5.0 stars, voted on 1 times
  4. Average rating: 5.0 stars, voted on 1 times
  5. Average rating: 4.0 stars, voted on 12 times
  6. Average rating: 2.0 stars, voted on 3 times
  7. Average rating: 2.0 stars, voted on 2 times
  8. Average rating: 1.3 stars, voted on 3 times
  9. Average rating: 1.3 stars, voted on 1 times
  10. Average rating: 1.0 stars, voted on 2 times
PS: You also might want to make two clear column headings at the top of the feedback/suggestions page: one for feedback and one for suggestions.

Just to be clear, this consideration will still apply. For example, sometimes you might have different number of votes come out to the same average: %100 positive from 23 votes versus %100 positive from 17 votes.

I agree with the thumbs-up/thumbs-down system, but I do think the percentage should be represented as a five star rating, as I explained here and there. (By the way, links to comment anchors does not seem to work very well for me. The page seems to readjust after it officially loads.)

Great suggestion, though I'll amend it a bit to say that we're likely going to transition away from the 5 star rating in favor of a thumbs-up/thumbs-down system instead.  Under that scenario, it will be more clear cut how to sort ratings, as it'll simply be the record with the higher percent of thumbs up that gets ranked higher.  Thanks for pointing this out!

Good observation!

Yes! Let's add this small but important tweak!

p.s. Normally, people don't rate their own suggestion/stuff... because... well... it's a little silly as you said ;-) So, let me add mine to yours here.

To rate your own suggestions seems a little silly... Maybe on page creation, the user should be able to rate his/her own page. Alternatively, have a new suggestion automatically get a 5-star rating from the user by default.
