Launchpad Translation Tutorial

WiserEarth is using the translation interface on Launchpad.net to help translate this site.  Launchpad.net is a site that supports and manages the development of open source software, and has an excellent active community of volunteer translators to help out with this project.

 

 

 

Tutorial

 

Let's walk through the basic steps to get you started on translating for the WiserEarth localization project.

 

 

Step 1: Start by visiting the Launchpad site:

Step 2: When you first arrive on Launchpad's WiserEarth project page, you will see a number of different languages displayed depending on where your browser's location is based in.  For the United States, the 3 native languages spoken (besides English) would be Inuktitut, Spanish and Yiddish.  For someone from Mexico or China, you will see other languages.

 

To see all the languages available that are being translated for WiserEarth, click on the "View Template & All Languages" link as circled in red below:

 

 

 

Step 3: To start translating, you will need to be logged in. Using one of the language passwords we have set up below, select login/register in the upper right hand corner of the screen (circled below).  You'll see that we have created an account for each translation language currently supported to help make it easier for our translation volunteers (so you don't have to create yet another login). Here below is a list of available logins:

Step 4: Once you've logged in, click on the language you would like to start translating

Depending on your preferred languages, you may only see a few languages displayed.  If you don't see the language you want to translate in, click again on "View Template & All Languages" to view all the languages available for translation.

Click on the language you want to translate into.  In this example, I'll click on Brazilian Portuguese:

 

 

 

Step 5: You are now ready to start translating. Just enter the new translation into the text boxes provided.

 

Before getting started with the translations, we invite you to read the WiserEarth Launchpad Translation Guidelines

 

We suggest that each translation entered is reviewed by one other person, so check the box "someone should review this translation" if you are the first person to translate the field. If not, you can select a suggestion already made by someone else and then leave this box unchecked. Once the initial version of the site is launched in your language, we will get the chance to re-review all the fields to make sure they are correct.

 

Step 6: Completing a translation

 

When a translation has been made and has also been reviewed, it is complete and will be recorded as such on the progress bar. (although it will still appear on the translation page).  If a translation does not need reviewing, do not select the review box. Click on 'save & continue' at the bottom of the page to make sure the translation is correctly saved.

 

 

Tips on the Translation Fields

 

Every line of text that's eligible for translation shows the following fields:

Item number - 1, 2, 3....
English - the English text to be translated
Current (language) - Shows any translations currently entered into the system
New Translation - A text field for you to enter in the translation

 

You can choose to change what items show up - such as only untranslated items, translated items, suggested translations, etc from the drop-down menu:

To enter a new translation, click on the "New Translation" text field, and enter in the translation text. 
In the example below, I've entered "Trabalhos" as the Portuguese translation for the English text "Jobs".

If you need more room to enter in text for your translation, you can click on the button on the far right to increase the size of the text field.

If you would like someone to review your translation, check the box that says "Someone should review this translation".  This will tag your translation as a "Suggestion", and alert administrators to review it a later time for approval.

Once you're done with your translations, make sure you scroll down and click the "Save & Continue" button.   Otherwise, your translations won't get saved into the system.

 

 

 

Using Launchpad Suggestions

For some languages, Launchpad can provide suggestions for commonly used words or phrases. Not every language will have suggestions, but if you would like to activate this option, you can click on the language you're translating to from the drop down menu.  In the example below, I've chosen Brazilian Portuguese as my language "guide" to offer up suggestions:

How to go directly to a translation, number 100 for example ?

 

When you want to go to the line to tranlate number 100 you have no other way than to click on next page 5 times, this takes a lot of time.

 

Workaround : at the end of the http address (URL) change the page number like below : replace the start=20 by start=100

 

Example on the french translation :
