Scenario and Brainstorm

Process of producing a "Policy Sheet"

Policy Sheet

Dear Commissioner Labios de Gallina
We want to concisely convey to you our concerns and proposed policy regarding local Food Security.

1. What is local "Food Security" you ask ?

Local Food Security is "Insurance of continued accessible food that is biologically diverse, nutritious, focusing on local disseminated growth, production, and distribution for all community members."

[The vision is small local biodiverse neighborhood farms (relative location) where in government dosnt obstruct their proliferation]

The desired outcomes of our policy application is the intent of creation of small neighborhood gardens with government encouragement by way of funding and infrastructure including areas of taxes, zonation, public encouragement.

An outcomes of policy examples are: encourage local stores to create demand by featuring locally produced foods.

2. Local food security is important because:
a. Increasing costs of fuel to bring food.
b. Local food strengthens local economy,
c. Local food has higher quality, better tasting (better nutritional value) food encouraging better quality of life.
d. Food is necessary to life.
e. Local food - more control at local level - Local autonomy.

3. What might happen if we dont enact a policy.
You need to be involved because
a. You control zonation of agricultural land that is zoned that reduces food arable for planting
b. As a legislator, be proactive instead of reactive in the case of any of the challenges to our local food system.
c. Our grassroots group wants it, with the large local support base to encourage policy implementation.

4. These are some ideas and examples that we would like enacted, ways to achieve through policy to reach goals:
a. School Programs
b. Mentorships - farmers teach new farmers
c. Water formula - water needs to be allocated for food production
d. Repeal laws that exist that discourage local food production, change to "Chicken opportunity zone".
e. Taxes
f. reallocation of community land
g. put land into Agricultural Land Trust - zonation
h. jobs for youth to learn skills - urban farming in backyards, share produce from yards.
i. marginal lands, football fields
j. city / cooporate support for bioremediation - brown fields to green fields
k. support for farmers markets
l. decriminalize water catchment / requiring graywater.
m. gmo pesticide free
